U. of Alberta Gets $42 Million for Women and Children’s Health

The University of Alberta received a joint gift Wednesday that will pump more than $42 million (U.S.) into its Women and Children’s Health Research Institute, Global News reports.

The bulk of the donation, about $31.25 million, comes from the Stollery Children’s Hospital Foundation. The Royal Alexandra Hospital Foundation is supplying another $11.3 million. The two foundations provided launch funding for the institute, which opened in 2006 and is the only research center of its kind in Canada.

Among other things, the new money will fund grants for peer-reviewed research, matches for grants from other sources, and recruitment of scientists and support staff.
