U. of Maryland and D.C. Museum Launch Arts Collaboration

The University of Maryland and the Phillips Collection have forged a wide-ranging partnership that will involve a range of exhibitions, research, and scholarly programs at the campus and the Washington, D.C., art museum, reports The Washington Post.

The agreement expands the university's cultural presence in nearby Washington a year and a half after a prospective partnership with the Corcoran Gallery of Art fell through. The financially struggling Corcoran opted instead to turn over its assets to the National Gallery of Art and George Washington University.

"I feel like a phoenix rising from the ashes," university President Wallace D. Loh said of the new deal, which will establish a University of Maryland Center for Art and Knowledge at the Phillips Collection; joint programs in art, music, researc,h and technology; and, down the road, a gallery and and open storage facility bearing the Phillips name on or near the university's College Park campus.
