Union of Atheist Nonprofits Forms Biggest U.S. Secular Group

The U.S. branch of British scientist and author Richard Dawkins' atheism foundation has merged with the like-minded Center for Inquiry, creating the largest secularist organization in America, reports the Religion News Service. The new entity will retain the center's name but will be headed by Robyn Blumner, executive director of the Richard Dawkins Foundation for Reason and Science.

Mr. Dawkins, an evolutionary biologist and author of the 2006 best-seller The God Delusion and other books, is an outspoken and sometimes controversial advocate for religious abstention. His foundation adds $1.3 million to $1.5 million in assets to the Center for Inquiry, which has a $5.2 million budget and operates programs on human rights, freedom of expression, and the advancement of science as well as promoting secularism and opposing religious encroachment in public policy.
