Philanthropist T. Denny Sanford talks to Forbes about the growth of his university-level training program for nonprofit fundraisers. The billionaire banker launched the Sanford Institute of Philanthropy in 2014 in partnership with National University in San Diego.
The program offers seminars on honing pitches, building lasting ties with donors, and other front-line skills in what Mr. Sanford terms "cause selling," utilizing a textbook he helped develop based on his experiences with fundraisers. In recent months the institute has started holding events at other colleges, including John F. Kennedy University in the San Francisco Bay Area and Augustana University in Mr. Sanford's home state of South Dakota.
