President Obama today nominated Sylvia Mathews Burwell, the president of the Walmart Foundation and a former ranking official with the Bill & Melinda Gates Foundation, to serve as the administration's budget chief. The New York Times and Bloomberg were among the media reporting the choice shortly before the official announcement.
Ms. Burwell joined the charitable arm of retail giant Walmart after working for a decade at the Gates Foundation, where she did stints as chief operating officer and head of global development. Walmart President and CEO Mike Duke called her "a strong leader who both masters the details and has a clear vision for making big things happen."
If she is confirmed, the appointment as director of the Office of Management and Budget would mark a return to the White House for Ms. Burwell, who served in a number of economic-policy positions during the Clinton administration.
