Wikipedia Opens India Office, First Outside U.S.

Nonprofit online encyclopedia Wikipedia has opened an office in New Delhi, its first outside the United States, in the wake of its most successful fund raiser, Bloomberg reports.

The Wikimedia Foundation, which operates the world's fifth most-visited Web site, exceeded a $16-million target during a 50-day campaign that ended in January. The founation has periodically held online fund raisers since 2005 to keep the site free of advertising.

Wikipedia founder Jimmy Wales said the Indian office will boost the encyclopedia's service in Hindi and other local languages and that the organization is mulling further expansion in the Middle East and North Africa to reach Arabic speakers.
