Facebook CEO Mark Zuckerberg and his wife, physician and former teacher Priscilla Chan, will open a private school next year tailored to the needs of children from low-income families in East Palo Alto, Calif., the San Jose Mercury News reports.
The Primary School will begin with infant and early education programs in August 2016, gradually expanding classes up to eighth grade, and will incorporate health services for students and their families as part of a holistic approach to alleviating the impact of poverty on children's well-being and learning.
Funding for the school will be channeled through the Silicon Valley Community Foundation, to which Mr. Zuckerberg and Ms. Chan have given more than $1 billion in Facebook stock. Ms. Chan declined to estimate the size of the couple's investment in the the project. They have made multiple high-profile education gifts in recent years, including a $100-million donation to the Newark, N.J., school system that became the focus of fierce debate.
The Zuckerberg-Chan school and other major philanthropic gestures by Silicon Valley moguls are noted in a USA Today article on tech billionaires' escalating zeal for giving.
