A Former Obama Policy Adviser Will Lead Alliance for Justice

Rakim Brooks, a former policy adviser for the Treasury Department in the Obama administration, has been tapped as the next president of the Alliance for Justice.

Rakim Brooks has been tapped as its next president. A lawyer, he most recently was a senior campaign strategist for the ACLU’s Systemic Equality Campaign and previously served in former President Barack Obama’s administration as a policy adviser for the Treasury Department.

Rakim will succeed the organization’s founder, Nan Aron, who has led the justice group for 42 years.

Deaconess Foundation

Bethany Johnson-Javois, CEO of the St. Louis Integrated Health Network, will become CEO and president of the $72 million foundation on October 18.

Alliance for Justice

Deaconess Foundation

Bethany Johnson-Javois, CEO of the St. Louis Integrated Health Network, will become CEO and president of the $72 million foundation on October 18.

She will succeed Cheryl Walker, who has served as its interim leader since October 2020, when Starsky Wilson departed to lead the Children’s Defense Fund.

Warner Music Group/Blavatnik Family Foundation Social Justice Fund

Lorelei Williams will be its first executive director, based in New York. Most recently she was senior vice president of grant programs at Comic Relief U.S.

The fund was announced last summer when it pledged to make $100 million in grants to build more equitable communities, combat structural racism, and seek justice for historically marginalized populations.

World Relief

Myal Greene, senior vice president of international programs, has been promoted to become the Christian humanitarian-aid group’s next president and CEO.

He succeeds its CEO, Tim Breene, and its president, Scott Arbeiter, who are both retiring.

More New CEOs

Carlos Alemán, chief operating officer at the Hispanic Interest Coalition of Alabama, will be promoted to CEO on January 1, 2022. He follows Isabel Rubio, its founder and CEO for 20 years, who will step down from the helm on December 31.

Leah Austin has been named president and CEO of the National Black Child Development Institute. She joins the institute from the Schott Foundation for Public Education, where she was director of its National Opportunity to Learn Network.

Amy Javaid, who has served as interim president and CEO of A Wider Circle since January, will continue in the role permanently. Previously its senior vice president, Javaid followed its founder, Mark Bergel, who stepped down as its leader in December.

Perry Maddox, CEO of Restless Development, will take the reins of All Hands and Hearts on September 1. He will follow Erik Dyson, who is leaving after eight years.

Timothy Rodgers will be the next director of the Museum of Arts and Design, effective September 15. He is currently the director and CEO of the Phoenix Art Museum.

Virginia Shearer, director of education at the High Museum of Art in Atlanta, has been appointed executive director of the Sarasota Art Museum of Ringling College of Art and Design.

League of Women Voters of the United States

This group that educates voters about political candidates and encourages women to participate in civic matters has created a new executive team, including three new leaders.

Ayo Atterberry, a senior associate at the Annie E. Casey Foundation, is now chief strategy officer.

Sarah Courtney has been promoted from communications and digital strategy senior director to chief communications officer.

Ellen Hobby, interim chief operations officer since February, will continue in the role permanently. Until last year she was chief operating officer at the Epilepsy Foundation.

Robert Wood Johnson Foundation

Kimberlee Cornett is now director of its impact investment strategy, overseeing the $13.2 billion foundation’s commitment to spend $200 million on impact investments related to health, well-being, and equity. She was previously managing director of the Kresge Foundation’s Social Investment Practice.

Zoila Jennings and Akobe Sandy have also been hired as impact investment officers. Jennings was most recently senior relationship manager at U.S. Bank’s Community Development Corporation. Sandy was a senior associate at the MacArthur Foundation, where he managed its $500 million impact-investments portfolio.

Other Notable Appointments

Krista Bofill, vice president of institutional advancement and communications at Converse College, has been named vice president for development and alumni engagement at Stetson University.

Stacey Brayboy is now senior vice president of public policy and government affairs at March of Dimes. Prior to joining the pediatric and maternal health group, she was director of the Virginia Office of Intergovernmental Affairs under Gov. Ralph Northam.

Diallo Brooks, senior director of field mobilization at People for the American Way, has been hired as senior vice president of programs and advocacy at the Schott Foundation for Public Education.

Nora Carr, chief of staff at Guilford County Schools in North Carolina, is joining the Z. Smith Reynolds Foundation as assistant director.

Baaba Halm, executive deputy commissioner and chief diversity officer at the NYC Department of Housing Preservation and Development, has joined Enterprise Community Partners as vice president and New York state market leader.

David Harris, a partner at City Fund, has been appointed executive vice president at Christel House International. Previously he founded the Mind Trust and served as its CEO until 2018.

Kristine Kippins, director of policy at the Constitutional Accountability Center, will now serve as deputy legal director for policy at Lambda Legal, which pursues litigation, education, and public-policy work to advance equal rights for LGBTQ people.

Alberto Morales, associate director of school growth and student recruitment at the Cristo Rey Network, will be the first project manager at Chicago Latinos in Philanthropy.

Keith Richardson, vice president for external affairs at Delaware Valley University, has joined Gwynedd Mercy University as vice president for university advancement. He succeeds Gerald McLaughlin, who retired in November after 15 years there.
