The family of Amazon.com founder and CEO Jeff Bezos has donated $20-million to Seattle’s Fred Hutchinson Cancer Research Center to pursue breakthroughs in immunotherapy for cancer sufferers, The Seattle Times writes.
The gift announced Monday will serve as “catalytic philanthropy,” allowing Hutchinson to work on multiple research fronts simultaneously, said Dr. Larry Corey, the center’s president and director.
Mike Bezos, the Amazon head’s father, said the family—which gave $10-million to Hutchinson in 2009—has been “encouraged by the spectacular results in patients with leukemia and lymphoma.” The center pioneered bone-marrow transplants for leukemia and is aiming to extend immunotherapy treatments to other cancers.
