A collection of major foundations and other donors has contributed nearly $20 million to United States Artists, a nonprofit that makes unrestricted grants to support creative projects, reports The New York Times. The biggest share comes from the Ford Foundation, which is providing $10 million, with the Rockefeller, Doris Duke, and Knight foundations each contributing $1 million.
The funds will serve as an operating endowment for United States Artists, which was founded a decade ago by Ford and other grant makers has awarded some $21 million to accomplished artists in design, dance, literature, music, theater, and other disciplines. “Artists can drive social change by inspiring our imaginations and challenging us all to work toward a better world,” said Darren Walker, president of the Ford Foundation, which has devoted its grant making to addressing social and economic inequality.
