Ballmer Group Gives $24 Million to Boys & Girls Clubs of America for Los Angeles County Programs

Ballmer Group grants $24 million to support 18 Boys & Girls Club organizations in LA County, serving more than 50,000 youth.

Also, the Peterson Center on Healthcare creates a $50 million institute to improve health outcomes, and the Indianapolis Motor Speedway Museum received $25 million toward its capital campaign.

Here are notable new grant awards compiled by the Chronicle:

Peterson Center on Healthcare

$50 million to establish the Peterson Health Technology Institute, a new nonprofit organization that will independently evaluate digital technology on its efforts to improve health outcomes, advance equity and privacy, and lower costs in health care.

Lilly Endowment and Dyson Foundation

$25 million to the Indianapolis Motor Speedway Museum toward its $89 million capital campaign to renovate the museum.

The Lilly Endowment, which is also a financial supporter of the Chronicle, gave the museum $20 million and the Dyson Foundation gave $5 million.

Ballmer Group

$24 million to the Boys & Girls Clubs of America to support 18 of its affiliate organizations in Los Angeles County, which serve a combined 50,000 youths across 170 facilities within clubs, schools, and public housing.

Parker Health Group

$18.8 million to Rutgers University’s Robert Wood Johnson Medical School to create the Parker Health Group Division of Geriatrics within the medical school’s Department of Family Medicine and Community Health.

Sorenson Legacy Foundation and the Joseph and Kathleen Sorenson Legacy Foundation

$18 million to the Intermountain Primary Children’s Hospital to build new patient rooms and play spaces for children who are under treatment for cancer or blood disorders.

Bezos Earth Fund

$12 million to the Smithsonian Tropical Research Institute to support Geo-Trees, an international consortium that uses satellite monitoring to collect accurate data on forest biomass as a measure of carbon stored in trees.

OpenAI

$5 million to the American Journalism Project to develop ways to use artificial intelligence to support local news organizations.

Vaccine Confidence Fund

$5 million to 11 researchers and organizations to test methods of using behavioral science, social media, and digital platforms to build trust in and access to vaccinations.

Warner Music Group Blavatnik Family Foundation Social Justice Fund

$4 million to 13 organizations that are led by Black and other historically marginalized people. The grantees work in the areas of arts and culture, criminal-justice reform, education, or an intersection of these priorities.

Center at Sierra Health Foundation

$4 million to 22 grantees that work in community and economic development across Northern California.

W.M. Keck Foundation

$4 million to the California Institute of Technology to endow the Edward C. Stone Professorship, in honor of the Caltech physicist who worked as project scientist for NASA’s Voyager mission for 50 years until his retirement in 2022.

Schmidt Family Foundation

$3.5 million to 10 organizations and universities to develop new tools forimproving the sustainability of fisheries around the world.

The grants were made through its Schmidt Marine Technology Partners program.

Pollock-Krasner Foundation

$2.7 million to 93 artists and nonprofit organizations that work directly with artists to create new work.

Burton D. Morgan Foundation

$2.1 million to organizations that advance entrepreneurship in northeast Ohio.

Overdeck Family Foundation

$2 million over two years to Arizona State University to support the Next Education Workforce program at Mary Lou Fulton Teachers College. The program offers teachers opportunities to specialize in subjects and create teams of educators within schools with greater depth of expertise.

Prudential Foundation

$1.2 million to the Nonprofit Finance Fund for the Newark Nonprofit Capacity Accelerator, a new effort to strengthen charities that serve residents of Newark, N.J.

Mellon Foundation

$1 million to the University of Montana to augment its curriculum with expertise from local Indigenous and Native leaders, both within the Native American Studies Department and across the university.

The grant will also increase scholarship opportunities for students from Montana’s tribal communities.

New Grant Opportunity

Data.org and Microsoft are accepting proposals for the Generative AI Skills Grant Challenge, a global grant program that will help organizations in work-force development and economic growth to offer training and skills development in generative artificial intelligence. Priority will go to higher-education institutions and organizations that focus on the equitable and community-led programs within historically marginalized populations around the world. Organizations will receive cash grants and access to Microsoft’s cloud-computing resources, technical guidance from Microsoft A.I. experts, and data training. Proposals are due August 15.
