President Bush and Vice President Cheney have released information about their contributions to charities last year.
President Bush and the first lady, Laura Bush, gave $77,785 to churches and charities in 2004, more than 11 percent of their taxable income of $672,788.
The White House said that the Bushes made their gifts last year to a variety of nonprofit organizations, including the American Red Cross; AmeriCares; the Combined Federal Campaign, the federal government’s annual charity drive; Evergreen Chapel, where religious services are held at the Camp David presidential retreat; the Salvation Army World Service Office; St. John’s Church, Lafayette Square, an Episcopal parish near the White House; and the Susan G. Komen Breast Cancer Foundation.
