Bushes, Cheneys Release Giving Information

President Bush and Vice President Cheney have released information about their charitable giving last year.

Mr. Bush and First Lady Laura Bush donated $143,300 to nonprofit organizations, while Mr. Cheney and Lynne Cheney contributed or arranged to give a total of nearly $8-million. The Bushes reported net taxable income of $744,682 last year, while the Cheneys said their adjusted gross income was $36-million.

The White House said that $75,000 of the Bushes’ contributions were royalties from the president’s book, A Charge to Keep. That money was distributed in equal amounts to the Boy Scouts of America, the Girl Scouts of America, the Boys and Girls Clubs of America, and Girls Inc.

In 1999, Mr. and Mrs. Bush provided $210,000 to churches and charities, including $130,000 in royalties from Mr. Bush’s book. The Bushes released tax records last year that detailed their gifts from 1991 to 1998 (The Chronicle, April 6, 2000).

Vice President and Mrs. Cheney said that they donated $41,646 to charities in 2000 from their taxable income. In addition, they arranged gifts of stock options, valued at approximately $7.8-million, that will eventually benefit three organizations: Capital Partners for Education, which provides educational help to needy high-schoolage children in the Washington area; George Washington University Medical Faculty Associates, in Washington; and the University of Wyoming, in the Cheneys’ home state.
