Bushes, Cheneys Release Giving Information

By  Elizabeth Schwinn
May 1, 2003

President Bush and Vice President Cheney have released information about their charitable giving last year.

Mr. Bush and First Lady Laura Bush donated $69,925 to charities, 9 percent of their net taxable income of $771,940 last year.

Mr. Cheney and his wife, Lynne, contributed nearly $121,983, about 13 percent of their net taxable income of $945,051.

The White House said Mr. and Mrs. Bush donated to numerous organizations last year, including Evergreen Chapel, where religious services are held at the Camp David presidential retreat; Southern Methodist University, Mrs. Bush’s alma mater; Tarrytown Methodist Church, in Austin, Tex., and the Combined Federal Campaign, which collects contributions from federal workers and directs the money to hundreds of charities. The White House did not say how much money the Bushes contributed to specific organizations.

The Cheneys’ charitable deductions included money that Mrs. Cheney received in royalties from Simon & Schuster for her book, America: A Patriotic Primer, as well as the advance she received for her forthcoming book, tentatively titled A Is for Abigail. The White House did not identify the charities to which the Cheneys donated money.
