Caterpillar Foundation and Girls Inc. Announce New Presidents (Transitions)

Southern Poverty Law Center

The civil-rights group confirmed newspaper reports that it fired its co-founder, Morris Dees. The group did not detail why but said Dees had failed to meet the organization’s standards of conduct. Dees told the Montgomery Advertiser he did not know why he had been ousted.

Caterpillar Foundation

Asha Varghese has joined the corporate foundation as its president. She was most recently director of global portfolio at the GE Foundation. The Caterpillar Foundation has given $715 million to alleviate global poverty since the machinery company created its philanthropic arm in 1952.

Caterpillar Foundation

Eli and Edythe Broad Foundation

Suzy Jack has been named vice president of the $1.8 billion foundation and chief of staff to its president, Gerun Riley. Most recently she was vice president of public affairs at the Los Angeles Times.

Girls Inc.

Stephanie Hull will become president and CEO on May 15. Most recently, she worked at the Woodrow Wilson National Fellowship Foundation as executive vice president and chief operating officer since 2012. Hull succeeds Judy Vredenburgh, who announced last summer that she would retire in the spring.

Low Income Investment Fund

Daniel Nissenbaum, managing director at Goldman Sachs and a longtime board member at the $491 million foundation, has taken over as president and CEO. He follows Nancy Andrews, who has stepped down after 20 years.

In addition, Giles Coates, global head of finance and accounting for FINCA Impact Finance, has been hired as chief financial officer.

More New CEOs

Jacqueline Burgess-Bishop, director of regional operations for ambulatory services at Cook County Health, has been appointed CEO of the National Kidney Foundation of Illinois.

Katie Carter, acting CEO of the Pride Foundation since September, has accepted the role on a permanent basis. Carter was previously director of strategic priorities. She succeeds Kris Hermanns, who stepped down in August.

Dale Royal, president of Atlanta Emerging Markets, has been tapped as executive director of the Local Initiatives Support Corporation’s office in Atlanta.

Mark Stuart will become president and CEO of the San Diego Foundation on May 13. Before joining the $836 million community foundation, he served as chief development and membership officer at San Diego Zoo Global.

Maria Vizcarrondo, director of community development and external relations at Cabrini University, has been selected as president of the Council of New Jersey Grantmakers.

Edwin Washington, a consultant for business development and fundraising through his firm, Washington Worldwide, has been named executive director of South Dakota Avenue/Riggs Road Main Street, a community-development organization in Washington, D.C.

Other Notable Appointments

Jacques Brunswick, head of real-estate projects at the Apollo Theater, has joined the Children’s Museum of Manhattan as chief operating officer.

Jessica Cox, a director at ClientEarth who oversaw its major-gift fundraising, has joined Environmental Advocates of New York as director of development.

Chris Ransom, senior program manager for Africa at the Zoological Society of London, has been named program officer for the Arcus Foundation’s great apes and gibbons program. He will be based in Cambridge, England.

Shariq Siddiqui, executive director of the Association for Research on Nonprofit Organizations and Voluntary Action, will now serve as the inaugural director of the Muslim Philanthropy Initiative at Indiana University’s Lilly Family School of Philanthropy. He is also editor of the Journal of Muslim Philanthropy & Civil Society.

Steve VanRoekel, interim chief operating officer at the Rockefeller Foundation since September, has been named to the position permanently. From 2011 until 2014, he was federal chief information officer of the United States, appointed by President Obama.

Gretchen Wright, development manager for special contributions and brand awareness at the Alliance Theatre in Atlanta, has been appointed director of development at the Westport Country Playhouse.

Departures

Elizabeth Glassman, president and CEO of the Terra Foundation for American Art, is stepping down after 18 years in the top role.

Sean Daniel Murphy is stepping down as CEO of ICA Fund Good Jobs. He founded Fund Good Jobs in 2013 and oversaw its merger with Inner City Advisors in 2015.

Juan Sanchez, founder and CEO of Southwest Key Programs, has resigned after 32 years leading this Texas charity that has been housing migrant children separated from their parents at the Mexican border. Federal investigators have been looking into allegations of financial misconduct. The charity’s chief financial officer, Melody Chung, has also departed under pressure. Joella Brooks, chief operating officer, will serve as interim CEO.
