Here are notable new grant awards compiled by the Chronicle:
Cox Enterprises
$100 million to Ducks Unlimited to establish a fund that will benefit its Wetlands America Trust, which helps conserve wetlands in North America’s prairie region.
Cox enterprises made the grant in honor of Jim Kennedy, chairman emeritus of the media and automotive-services company and chairman of the James M. Cox Foundation. He has served as a volunteer with Ducks Unlimited for more than 50 years.
Bezos Earth Fund
$30 million over five years to North Carolina State University to build the first Bezos Center for Sustainable Protein.
The Bezos Earth Fund announced in March that it would commit $60 million to establish multiple research and development centers to develop new plant-based alternatives to meat. The fund has now increased that commitment to $100 million.
Rotary Foundation, World Vision, and Bill & Melinda Gates Foundation
$30 million over three years to enhance large-scale programs to reduce the incidence of malaria, pneumonia, and diarrheal diseases and improve health outcomes for children in the Democratic Republic of Congo, Mozambique, Nigeria, and Zambia.
Fred A. and Barbara M. Erb Family Foundation
$7.5 million challenge pledge to Detroit PBS to renovate a building that will house its organizational headquarters, video production, and broadcasts.
The grant will match gifts from other donors, dollar for dollar.
Eli Lilly and Company
$6.5 million to the United States Fund for Unicef to expand its work to improve the health outcomes of children and youths in India at high risk of noncommunicable diseases like Type 1 diabetes, respiratory illnesses, rheumatic and congenital heart disease, and sickle cell anemia.
REI Cooperative Action Fund
$3.8 million to 60 organizations that are working to create opportunities to spend time outside to bolster the health and well-being of historically marginalized communities.
The grants will also support research on the connection between health and time spent outdoors.
CareQuest Institute for Oral Health
$2.3 million to 14 organizations to increase access to oral health for marginalized communities in Alabama, California, Colorado, Florida, Massachusetts, Nebraska, Texas, and Vermont.
Santander Consumer USA and Santander Consumer USA Inc. Foundation
$1.7 million to 11 organizations to strengthen social and economic development in Texas, Arizona, and Florida.
Seven of the grants went to groups that serve communities in Dallas.
Olympia Companies Charitable Foundation
$1.5 million to eight charities that serve children in the Las Vegas metropolitan area.
The grantees, which each received between $90,000 and $280,000, work to send critically ill children to summer camp, provide necessities and educational opportunities to children in need, and offer assistance to families of children with cancer.
Mellon Foundation
$1.25 million to Marquette University to enhance its programs that create pathways to higher education for previously incarcerated people in southeast Wisconsin.
Pharmavite
$1 million to the Jed Foundation to expand its services to strengthen mental health and prevent suicide among teens and young adults at 1,200 schools that serve more than 6.5 million students from preschool through college.
New Grant Opportunity
The Sheri and Les Biller Family Foundation will award grants through its annual Social Impact Theatre grant program, which gives cash awards worth up to $25,000 to nonprofit theater organizations in Alaska, Arizona, California, Colorado, Oregon, and Washington that are planning performances relevant to current social issues. Eligible arts groups must have been active for at least two years and have had annual revenue of $1 million or more during that time. The award may be used to cover artistic, production, or overhead expenses for one production occurring between September 1, 2024, and August 31, 2025. Letters of interest are due June 7; full applications are due July 12.
