Dallas Foundation Installs Julie Diaz as New CEO

Julie Diaz, interim president and CEO since Matthew Randazzo departed in May, will remain at the helm permanently.

She has worked at the $559 million community fund since 2019 and was most recently its executive vice president and chief operating officer.

Jewish Community Foundation San Diego

Jeremy Pearl has been promoted to CEO. He has served as chief financial officer at the $711 million grant maker since 2005.

Pearl succeeds Beth Sirull, who has led the community fund for seven years and will remain an adviser there until June 30.

Jessica La Mesa, chief operating officer, has been promoted to co-CEO of this effective-altruism charity founded by the philosopher and author Peter Singer.

She will serve alongside her husband, Andrea La Mesa, who is the former general manager for North America at AirBnB and director of AirBnB Experiences.

West Virginia First Foundation

Jonathan Board will be the first executive director of this foundation that was created with the state’s $217 million share of national settlement money from pharmaceutical and pharmacy companies to combat the opioid crisis.

Most recently he was vice president for external affairs at Mon Health System.

More New CEOs

David Goldstein, a clinical psychologist and chief operating officer at New Alternatives for Children since 2018, has been promoted to executive director. He succeeds its founder, Arlene Goldsmith, who is stepping down after 42 years at the helm.

Shannan Herbert has been selected as the next CEO of the Washington Area Community Investment Fund, a nonprofit community development financial institution that makes low-cost loans to low- and moderate-income entrepreneurs in the Washington, D.C., metropolitan area. Previously she was executive vice president of inclusive credit at the fintech company Stratyfy.

Kathleen Mulcahy is now executive director of the Evelyn Alexander Wildlife Rescue Center. Prior to her most recent role as executive director of the cancer-support organization Fighting Chance, she served as mayor of Sag Harbor, N.Y.

Bobbie Sta. Maria, program director at the Sunrise Project, is returning to EarthRights International as executive director. She previously served as its southeast Asia legal coordinator from 2011 until 2013.

Melanie Stricklan has joined the Space Foundation as executive director of Space Workforce 2030, a collaborative effort between the Space Foundation and the Aerospace Corporation to increase diversity and inclusion among workers in the aeronautics industry. She is a co-founder of Slingshot Aerospace.

Jay Young, executive director of Common Cause Illinois, is joining the national office of Common Cause as senior director of voting and democracy.

Other Notable Appointments

Zachary Brown has been appointed executive vice president of development at WABE, the public-media station for NPR and PBS in Atlanta. Most recently he was director of individual giving at Habitat for Humanity International.

Kevin Chambers has been hired as Oklahoma state director and assistant director of international at the Center for a Humane Economy. Most recently he was a senior international trade specialist for the U.S. Department of Commerce.

Joe Dell’Orfano has been appointed chief technology officer at the climate-action and sustainable-development charity Verra. He previously served as senior vice president for technology at the restaurant chain Cava.

Jim Pitofsky, managing director of strategic alliances at the John Templeton Foundation, is now managing director of partnerships at Stand Together.

Pamela Redmon has joined the Child Mind Institute as chief marketing officer. She was previously senior vice president and chief communications and marketing officer at Share Our Strength.

Troy Robinson, chief development officer at Rise Against Hunger and Camp Fire, has been named chief development officer at the Trevor Project.

Gaby Strong, managing director of the NDN Foundation, has been promoted to vice president at the NDN Collective, an organization that works to empower Indigenous communities.

Departures

Doron Krakow, president and CEO of the JCC Association of North America since 2017, is departing. Jennifer Mamlet, the Jewish community organization’s executive vice president, will become acting president and CEO on April 1.

John Martinez has retired after two years as president and CEO of the National Hispanic Cultural Center Foundation.

Legacy

Norman Knight, founder of the Knight Quality chain of radio stations and a Boston philanthropist who quietly gave millions away, died on March 9 at age 99. He founded the 100 Club of Massachusetts, a charity that gives financial assistance to the families of first responders who die in the line of duty. He also gave undisclosed amounts to establish the Norman Knight Hyperbaric Medicine Center at Mass Eye and Ear, and the Norman Knight Nursing Center for Clinical and Professional Development at Massachusetts General Hospital.
