Dana Foundation Will Install New President in March

Caroline Montojo, director of life sciences and director of brain initiatives at the Kavli Foundation, will be the next president of the Dana Foundation.

Dana Foundation

Caroline Montojo, director of life sciences and also director of brain initiatives at the Kavli Foundation, will be its next president, effective March 1.

She will follow Burton Mirsky, who has worked at the $232 million foundation for neuroscience research since 1996.

Doe Fund

Harriet Karr-McDonald, executive vice president, has been named president and CEO.

She succeeds her husband, George McDonald, who created the $315 million foundation 35 years ago to help formerly homeless or incarcerated people return to the work force. He is stepping back because of health reasons, but plans to remain with the group as chief transition officer.

In addition, Isabel Ames McDevitt will return to the Doe Fund as executive vice president. She previously worked there from 2000 until 2009 and more recently was CEO of Bridge House in Colorado.

Forward Cities

Fay Horwitt, president of the entrepreneurship group, has been promoted to president and CEO. She replaces Christopher Gergen, who co-founded the organization in 2014.

National Public Radio

Leora Hanser, chief development officer at the U.S. Soccer Foundation, has been selected as chief development officer at NPR.

More New CEOs

Shaun Floerke, a judge in Duluth, Minn., has been tapped as president and CEO of the Duluth Superior Area Community Foundation. He succeeds Holly Sampson, who retired in June after 30 years there.

Curtis Holloman will lead the Foundation for a Healthy High Point as executive director. Most recently he was senior adviser and director of grants and programs at the Foundation for a Healthy St. Petersburg.

Jay Kim, chief operating officer, has been promoted to executive director of the Foundation for MetroWest. He replaces Judy Salerno, who has retired after 15 years there.

Elizabeth McClanahan, president and dean of the Appalachian School of Law, has been named CEO of the Virginia Tech Foundation. She previously served as a justice on the Supreme Court of Virginia.

Sarah Nathan, associate director at the Lilly Family School of Philanthropy at Indiana University, has been named executive director of Northfield Shares, the Northfield Community Foundation.

John Walters, chief operating officer, will now be president and CEO of the Hudson Institute. He follows Kenneth Weinstein, who joined the institute in 1991 and has been its president and CEO since 2011. Weinstein will remain with the organization as a fellow.

Other Notable Appointments

Karen Avery, senior director at the PBS Foundation, has joined the nonprofit executive-search firm Isaacson, Miller as a partner.

Jan Bigelow, vice president of finance at American Humane, has been promoted to chief financial officer. She succeeds Clifford Rose, who is retiring.

Karen Bisko has been named vice president of philanthropy at Catholic Charities Community Services. She most recently was chief development officer at the Boys & Girls Clubs of Greater Scottsdale.

Richard Bland, chief operating officer at the Washington National Cathedral, has been named vice president for foundation and government development at WETA, a public broadcasting group in Washington.

Ellen Brownell, senior investment adviser at Pohlad Investment Management, has been named associate vice president and director of investments at the Saint Paul &Minnesota Foundation.

Maria Sachiko Cecire has joined the Andrew W. Mellon Foundation as a program officer in higher learning. She is an associate professor of literature and the founding director of the academic program and Center for Experimental Humanities at Bard College.

Meagan Dunn, director of community outreach and partnerships at the Henry Ford Health System, has joined YWCA Kalamazoo in the newly created role of vice president of programs.

Jack Harper, vice president of corporate tax at Discover Financial Services, has been selected as vice president, treasurer, and chief financial officer at the Kettering Foundation, a $33 million grant maker in Dayton, Ohio.

Ken Fincher, vice president for institutional advancement and executive director of the foundation at Middle Georgia State University, will now serve as vice president for institutional advancement at Oregon Institute of Technology.

Lynn Page Flaherty has joined the Friends of the Public Garden as vice president of advancement and external affairs, a new role at the Boston nonprofit group. Most recently she was a consultant at Marts & Lundy where she worked with independent schools, universities, and community organizations on campaign planning.

David Gilmore, managing director of investments at the Harry and Jeanette Weinberg Foundation, has been promoted to deputy chief investment officer at the $3 billion foundation.

Amy Ley-Sanchez, chief clinical officer at Hillsides, has been promoted to executive vice president and chief operating officer at this social-services agency that serves 17,000 children and families in Southern California.

LeAnn Littlewolf, economic development director at the American Indian Community Housing Organization, has been appointed senior program officer at the Northland Foundation.

Janine Quijije, former chief development officer at the “I Have a Dream” Foundation, has been hired as chief advancement officer at Communities in Schools.

Delphia York Ridley, chief development officer at the United Way of Greater Houston, has been appointed managing director and senior nonprofit consultant at Bridge Philanthropic Consulting. In addition, Keith Green has joined the firm as an executive consultant. Previously, he was managing director of Next Step & Beyond.

Departures

Jim Denova, program director and vice president at the Claude Worthington Benedum Foundation, intends to retire on June 30. He has worked at the foundation since 2000.

Vanita Gupta, president and CEO of the Leadership Conference on Civil and Human Rights and the Leadership Conference Education Fund, is stepping down after President-elect Joe Biden nominated her to be associate attorney general. Wade Henderson, a former president and CEO of the two civil-rights organizations, will serve as their interim leader.

Jake Porway, co-founder and executive director of DataKind, has stepped down. Russatta Buford, chief operating officer, will serve as interim executive director until a permanent successor has been named.

Jon Pratt, founding executive director of the Minnesota Council of Nonprofits, will retire this year. He has led the group since 1987.

Sheila Smith, executive director of Minnesota Citizens for the Arts, will retire in February after 25 years of leadership.

Helgi Tomasson, artistic director and principal choreographer at the San Francisco Ballet since 1985, intends to depart before June 2022.

Mike Troncoso, vice president and head of the Justice and Opportunity Initiative at the Chan Zuckerberg Initiative, is departing. Osi Imeokparia, vice president of product and head of technology for the Justice and Opportunity Initiative, will lead the program on an interim basis.

Barbara Vacarr has stepped down as CEO of the Kripalu Center for Yoga and Health after four years. Robert Mulhall, vice president of programming and business strategy, will serve as acting CEO of the nonprofit yoga retreat.
