Legacy
William White, who recently retired as CEO of the Charles Stewart Mott Foundation, died on October 9 at age 82. He joined the foundation as a consultant in 1969 after marrying Claire Mott, a granddaughter of the industrialist Charles Stewart Mott. During White’s 50-year tenure, the foundation grew from a $377 million grant maker focused on Flint, Mich., to a major philanthropy with assets topping $3 billion. White’s son, Ridgway White, succeeded him as CEO last fall. (The Mott Foundation is a supporter of the Chronicle.)
