Grameen Foundation Names First Woman Leader; GlobalGiving Taps New CEO From Gates Foundation

Grameen Foundation

Zubaida Bai, managing director of CARE Social Ventures, will be its next president and CEO. She is the first woman and the first Indian American to lead the microfinance organization.

Bai succeeds Brent Chism, who has served as its interim leader since March and was previously its executive vice president of programs.

Chicago Community Trust

Andrea Sáenz has been promoted from chief operating officer to president and CEO. She is the first Latina to guide the $4.7 billion foundation.

She succeeds Helene Gayle, who departed over the summer to become president of Spelman College.

Gambrell Foundation

Brian Collier, executive vice president at Foundation for the Carolinas, will become president of the $149 million foundation in December.

In addition, Sally Gambrell Bridgford has been named CEO. She is president of her family foundation’s Board of Directors and the founder of Yoga One.

The two leaders will replace Hannah Rankin, its longtime executive director, who will remain involved in the Gambrell family office.

GlobalGiving

Victoria Vrana will become its CEO in January. Currently she is deputy director of philanthropic partnerships at the Bill & Melinda Gates Foundation, where she has worked for 11 years.

Kristin Wright, GlobalGiving

Vrana will replace Donna Callejon, who has been its interim CEO since December 2021 and remain as a consultant during the leadership transition through March.

More New CEOs

Denise Forte has been promoted from senior vice president for partnerships and engagement to CEO of the Education Trust. She has served as its interim CEO since April 2021, when John King Jr. took a leave of absence to run for governor of Maryland. King will remain president of the education organization.

C.D. Glin, vice president at the PepsiCo Foundation, has been promoted to president. He will continue serving as global head of philanthropy at PepsiCo.

Bronna Kahle, who has served three terms as a member of the Michigan House of Representatives, will become president and CEO of the Lenawee Community Foundation on January 2.

Charles Lomax Jr., director of community empowerment for the City of Knoxville, will join the Knoxville Area Urban League as president and CEO on December 12. He follows Phyllis Nichols, who is retiring after leading the racial-justice organization for two decades.

Craig Warren, chief administrative officer and acting CEO since May, has been installed as CEO of the Washburn Center for Children. He is the first person of color to lead the Minneapolis organization.

Henry J. Kaiser Family Foundation

The $1.1 billion foundation has named three new senior leaders.

Ann DeFabio has been hired as senior vice president and chief communications officer. She most recently worked at Pew Charitable Trusts as senior vice president and chief communications officer.

Osula Evadne Rushing, vice president for program and strategy at Grantmakers in Health, is now senior vice president for strategic engagement.

Irving Washington, CEO of the Online News Association, will join the foundation as a senior fellow in its new health-misinformation program area.

Surdna Foundation

Mishi Faruqee, president of Youth First Initiative, has been tapped as director of the Andrus Family Fund, where she will oversee a $4 million grant-making portfolio that supports racial-justice organizations.

She follows Katayoon Majd and Nyoka Acevedo, who have led the fund on an interim basis since Manuela Arciniegas joined the Ford Foundation in March.

Other Notable Appointments

Ginneh Baugh, vice president of impact and innovation at Purpose Built Communities, will now serve as chief impact officer at Big Brothers Big Sisters of America.

Chris Beaudoin, chief operations officer at Swedish Health System, has been appointed chief operations officer at the Allen Institute.

Christina DiSalvo, an implementation specialist for the Impact Center at the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill’s Frank Porter Graham Child Development Institute, is now a program officer for the Duke Endowment’s Child and Family Well-Being program area.

Natane Eaddy, a senior associate at the Annie E. Casey Foundation, has joined the Arthur M. Blank Family Foundation as senior program officer for youth development. In addition, Lisa Zook has been hired as senior officer for effective philanthropy. She co-founded the strategy and evaluation consulting firm Informed International.

Natalia Kiryttopoulou has been hired as lead for global assessment and advisory services at the Center for Effective Philanthropy, based in Madrid. Most recently she was an independent learning and evaluation consultant.

Ticiana Maloney, director of grants management at StrongMinds, is now grants manager at the Geraldine R. Dodge Foundation. Susan Vega, a consultant at BDO-FMA, has also joined the $380 million foundation as controller.

Jia Osiel has joined Achieving the Dream as chief talent and equity officer. Most recently she was senior director of diversity, equity, inclusion, people, and culture at the energy company BP.

Michael Roberts has been hired as senior program officer and Sacha-Rose Phillips as a program officer for the McKnight Foundation’s Midwest climate and energy program. Roberts was most recently a consultant at Bloom Stem and Root, in Athens, Ga. Phillips was previously project manager for New York State affairs at the Environmental Defense Fund.

Kurt Steinberg, president of Montserrat College of Art, will become chief operating officer at the Peabody Essex Museum in January.

Kate Treanor, senior program director, has stepped in as interim vice president for program and strategy at Grantmakers in Health.

Steve Wilson, an art teacher and principal in the South Carolina school system, has joined the Harlem School of the Arts as chief operating officer.

Courtney Yohe Savage, vice president for government relations at the Society of Thoracic Surgeons, has been named senior vice president for policy and advocacy at the Cancer Support Community.

Departure

Amit Paley has departed as CEO of the Trevor Project. He has led the mental-health group for LGBTQ youths since 2017.
