Here are notable new grants compiled by The Chronicle:
Arcus Foundation and Novo Foundation
A combined $20 million over five years to support a new program focused on improving the lives of transgender people worldwide. The Global Trans Initiative will distribute grants to transgender activists and organizations as well as work intended to ensure that all transgender people live in a world where they are recognized, valued, and supported by their families and in society.
Ralph C. Wilson, Jr. Foundation
A total of $6 million to the Community Foundation for Southeast Michigan. The grants will create three endowed funds, one for cancer care, one for youth sports, and one for assets in the city of Grosse Pointe. $1 million will support organizational development at the community foundation. In addition, the foundation made a $4.2-million grant to Kaleida Health in Buffalo, N.Y., to support an endowment for the organization’s adult day services and senior home care.
Bill & Melinda Gates Foundation
$2 million over three years to the University of Texas at Austin’s Charles A. Dana Center to expand the New Mathways Project, which helps incoming college students succeed in math courses. The program, which already works in eight states, will expand to five more, working with faculty members, administrators, and policymakers to create mathematics task forces to promote math pathways where students will take courses relevant to their chosen fields of study.
Raymond John Wean Foundation
A total of $1.5 million to organizations that are creating economic opportunities for residents, enhancing educational resources, and revitalizing Ohio’s Mahoning Valley. Grants include $20,000 to support the Youngstown Business Incubator to develop its Women in Entrepreneurship program.
Teagle Foundation
A total of $1.5 million for projects that support liberal-arts education and help faculty develop curriculum. Grants include a total of $280,000 over three years to Franklin & Marshall College, Bucknell University, and the University of Pennsylvania to support a collaborative project to integrate the liberal arts into undergraduate business education.
Community Foundation for Greater Atlanta
A total of $1 million for small and mid-sized arts organizations in the Atlanta area. Grantees include the Museum of Design Atlanta, which received $150,000 over two years, and the Atlanta Shakespeare Company, which received $75,000.
John D. and Catherine T. MacArthur Foundation and Sage Foundation
$500,000 each over two years to support Kartemquin Films, a nonprofit documentary film production collective in Chicago. The MacArthur grant will provide leadership and infrastructure support, funds for the collective’s 50th anniversary celebrations, and filmmaker services. The Sage grant will provide general operating support, support for the 50th anniversary celebrations, and seed funds to launch a new program that will be announced at the Kartemquin’s June gala.
