Grants Roundup: $25 Million From Bloomberg Aims to Curb Drowning Deaths

Here are notable new grant awards compiled by The Chronicle:

Bloomberg Philanthropies

$25 million to expand the foundation’s global drowning-prevention program. The new money will fund community day-care facilities and playpens in Bangladesh and Vietnam and data collecting on drowning in sub-Saharan Africa. Partners include the World Health Organization, Synergos, and the Johns Hopkins Bloomberg School of Public Health.

Kinder Foundation

$10.7 million to Rice University’s Houston Education Research Consortium to expand its programs to more school districts in the greater Houston area. The consortium aims to improve communication between education researchers and school officials.

Laura and John Arnold Foundation

$6.6 million to the Penn Wharton Budget Model research group at the University of Pennsylvania’s Wharton School to evaluate the effects of federal policy proposals.

W.K. Kellogg Foundation

$3.5 million to Detroit Promise, which provides college scholarships to students at Detroit high schools. The grant will also support a pilot program that pairs counselors with scholarship recipients who attend specific community colleges.

Base 11

$1 million to the University of California at Irvine to create a rocketry program at the Henry Samueli School of Engineering with the goal of making the university the first to launch a liquid-fuel rocket into space.

New grant opportunity:

Charity Navigator and the Association for Research on Nonprofit Organizations and Voluntary Action have created the $10,000 Dugan Research Award for Philanthropic Impact to support nonprofits’ efforts to improve practices for measuring results.
