Grants Roundup: $35 Million From Walton Fund Supports Colo. and Miss. River Conservation

A fresh round of Walton Family Foundation conservation grants includes money to create a more flexible and efficient water-management system in the Colorado River Basin, a critical need for farms like this one.

Here are notable new grant awards compiled by The Chronicle:

Stavros Niarchos Foundation

$150 million to the Johns Hopkins University to create a center to conduct research on democracy and boost civic engagement. Read more about the Stavros Niarchos Foundation Agora Institute.

Walton Family Foundation

$35 million to preserve the Colorado River Basin and the Mississippi River Delta through grants to coalitions that include the National Wildlife Federation, the Lake Pontchartrain Basin Foundation, American Rivers, and the National Audubon Society, among other organizations.

Here are notable new grant awards compiled by The Chronicle:

Stavros Niarchos Foundation

Walton Family Foundation

$35 million to preserve the Colorado River Basin and the Mississippi River Delta through grants to coalitions that include the National Wildlife Federation, the Lake Pontchartrain Basin Foundation, American Rivers, and the National Audubon Society, among other organizations.

The grant includes $15 million to combat land loss along the Louisiana coast and $20 million to create a sustainable water-management system for the Colorado River. Read more about the Walton Family Foundation’s giving strategy.

St. David’s Foundation

More than $33 million to nonprofits in central Texas that provide health care to low-income families, including $12 million for area safety-net clinics.

Pew Center for Arts & Heritage

$10.3 million through 53 grants to artists and arts organizations in Philadelphia. Recipients include the Philadelphia Folklore Project and the Settlement Music School.

F.R. Bigelow Foundation, Mardag Foundation, and Saint Paul Foundation

More than $7.7 million through 232 grants to multiple nonprofits in Minnesota. Several of the grants focus on the historically African-American Rondo neighborhood of St. Paul.

Great Lakes Higher Education Corporation & Affiliates

$7.2 million to 32 four-year colleges in six states to support aid programs that help low-income students cope with financial emergencies in areas such as housing, child care, and health care.

Parker Institute for Cancer Immunotherapy

$3.46 million to six young researchers studying cancer treatments that use the body’s immune system. Recipients include students and fellows at Stanford Medicine, the University of Pennsylvania, and Memorial Sloan Kettering Cancer Center.

Berger-Marks Foundation

$1.5 million to WILL Empower, a program to develop women union leaders housed at Georgetown University’s Kalmanovitz Initiative for Labor and the Working Poor and Rutgers University’s Center for Innovation in Worker Organization. The grant is the last by the foundation, which is closing June 30.

Walmart Foundation

$1 million to Hire Heroes USA’s programs that connect military veterans with career opportunities.

Honda

$1 million to Nationwide Children’s Hospital to create the Honda Center for Gait Analysis and Mobility Enhancement to help children with spinal, neurological, and other conditions that impair mobility. The center will study gait, spine motion, prosthetics, and wheelchair design.
