Grants Roundup: Cornell’s College of Business Gets $150 Million

A third of the gift from SC Johnson and its chief executive, Fisk Johnson, will be in the form of a challenge grant, with the goal of raising $150 million more from other sources.

Here are notable new grant awards compiled by The Chronicle:

SC Johnson and Fisk Johnson

$150 million to Cornell University’s College of Business, which will be renamed the SC Johnson College of Business. The money will create an endowment, and $50 million will serve as a challenge grant to raise up to $150 million more from other sources.

Gates Foundation, Oak Foundation, and Carnegie Corporation of New York

A total of $6.5 million ($4.5 million from Gates and $1 million each from Oak and Carnegie) to PowerMyLearning to create tools that support personalized learning.

More than $3.2 million to nonprofits including United Way Worldwide, Boys and Girls Clubs, Goodwill Industries, and Emory University.

Aviv Foundation and Jim Joseph Foundation

$2.45 million to Yeshivat Chovevei Torah, the Modern Orthodox Rabbinical School in New York.

James M. Cox Foundation

$2 million to renovate and expand Centennial Olympic Park in Atlanta, Ga., home of the 1996 Summer Olympics.

W.W. Caruth Jr. Foundation

$1.5 million to Urban Teachers to recruit and train 450 aspiring teachers in the Dallas-Fort Worth area.

Omidyar Network

$1.5 million over three years to BudgIT, an organization in Nigeria that promotes government transparency, to expand its work making the government budget more accessible to citizens.

Andrew W. Mellon Foundation

Nearly $1 million to the American Philosophical Society to support native students and scholars, faculty members at tribal colleges, and research in Native American studies.
