Grants Roundup: Gates and Chan-Zuckerberg Back $12 Million Personalized-Learning Venture

Here are notable new grant awards compiled by The Chronicle:

Bill & Melinda Gates Foundation and Chan Zuckerberg Initiative

$12 million over four years to venture-philanthropy fund New Profit to create the Personalized Learning Initiative, which will provide grants and guidance to seven organizations working to advance personalized-learning technology: Highlander Institute, Big Picture Learning, iNACOL, PowerMyLearning, the Learning Accelerator, Transcend, and Valor Collegiate Academies.

The two grant makers pledged an additional $750,000 for another New Profit program, Proximity Accelerator, which supports nonprofits and social ventures led by people of color.

JPMorgan Chase

An $8.6 million commitment to multiple nonprofits helping to prepare people for well-paying jobs in health care. Grants will include $1 million to the Healthcare Career Advancement Program, a national organization of Service Employees International Union locals and health-care employers, to develop guidelines for apprenticeships that offer job experience.

Oak Foundation

$5 million over five years to MiracleFeet to support its work eradicating clubfoot in developing countries.

Harry and Jeanette Weinberg Foundation

$1 million to support 41 summer programs in Baltimore, including efforts by Code in the Schools, the Y in Central Maryland, and the Baltimore Youth Alliance.
