Grants Roundup: James and Alice Clark Fund Gives $10 Million to Expand Retreat for Veterans

A grant from the A. James and Alice B. Clark Foundation will expand Boulder Crest Retreat, a sanctuary for veterans that uses ancient warrior practices such as the labyrinth to help former military members make peace with their past experiences.

Here are notable new grant awards compiled by The Chronicle:

A. James and Alice B. Clark Foundation

$10 million to Boulder Crest Retreat, a Virginia sanctuary that provides free accommodation and activities for veterans and their families. With the grant, the nonprofit will expand the number of people it serves and purchase a ranch outside of Tucson, Ariz., to use as a second facility.

Paul G. Allen Frontiers Group

$10 million each over four years to create two research institutions, the Allen Discovery Center for Human Brain Evolution at Boston Children’s Hospital and Harvard Medical School and the Allen Discovery Center for Cell Lineage Tracing at the University of Washington School of Medicine.

Moss & Associates

$10 million to the College of Engineering and Computing at Florida International University to create the Moss School of Construction, Infrastructure, and Sustainability. The grant will support three endowments: one to hire a director for the school, another to provide student scholarships, and a third to support research and technology.

Ethics and Governance of Artificial Intelligence Fund

$7.6 million to nine organizations that aim to influence the development of artificial intelligence in the public interest. Most of the money will go to the Berkman Klein Center for Internet & Society at Harvard University and the Massachusetts Institute of Technology Media Lab. The fund was created in January with $27 million from the Knight Foundation, the Omidyar Network, LinkedIn co-founder Reid Hoffman, the William and Flora Hewlett Foundation, and billionaire investor Jim Pallotta.

S.D. Bechtel Jr. Foundation

$5 million to Outward Bound USA to start the Outward Bound Professional Learning Lab, which will use research to discern best practices for the organization’s instructors.

AT&T, BlackRock, Comcast NBCUniversal, Google.org, Open Society Foundations

$2.2 million to Fast Forward, a nonprofit accelerator for technology nonprofits.

MacNaughton Group Foundation

$1 million to U.S.VETS for programs to reduce homelessness among military veterans in Hawaii. This is the first grant from the foundation.

New Grant Opportunity

The Provident Bank Foundation is offering two $50,000 grants to organizations in New Jersey and Pennsylvania that provide outpatient medical care and housing for people in crisis. See the foundation’s website for more information.
