Hillary Clinton resigned from the Board of Directors of the Clinton Foundation on Sunday after formally declaring her candidacy in the 2016 presidential race, Politico and The New York Times report. Ms. Clinton, who joined the charity’s board in 2013 after stepping down as secretary of state and championed efforts on the political and economic empowerment of women, announced her departure in an email to the $2 billion philanthropy’s staff.
The foundation said it would consider changes this week in its donor policies, possibly including more frequent disclosure. The charity, which focuses on global health and anti-poverty projects, has drawn fire from foreign governments, which critics said create potential conflicts of interest in light of Ms. Clinton’s presidential ambitions. Foundation officials have previously said they might reinstate a ban on fundraising from governments abroad — imposed while Ms. Clinton’s served at State — during her campaign and possible White House occupancy.
