Sharif Aly, advocacy counsel at Islamic Relief USA, has been promoted to chief executive officer. He succeeds Anwar Khan, who is assuming the role of president.
JPMorgan Chase Foundation
Janis Bowdler, head of small business and community development for global philanthropy at JPMorgan Chase, has been promoted to president of the bank’s foundation. The company said in January that it intends to increase corporate giving by 40 percent to $1.75 billion over the next five years.
National Endowment for the Humanities
The Senate unanimously confirmed Jon Parrish Peede as chairman of the federal grant maker. Peede has served at the endowment since April 2017 as senior deputy chairman. Prior to that, he was publisher of the Virginia Quarterly Review, a literary magazine issued by the University of Virginia.
Silicon Valley Community Foundation
Daiva Natochy, vice president for talent, recruitment, and culture, has stepped down amid the turmoil surrounding alleged executive misconduct at the foundation. Natochy is the second executive to leave in recent weeks — Mari Ellen Loijens, the foundation’s top fundraiser, resigned on April 19.

Jane Martínez Dowling, executive director of the KIPP Through College program in New York City, will become president and CEO of ExpandED Schools, effective July 9. She will succeed Lucy Friedman, who has led ExpandED since its founding in 1998.
Kendra Melrose, general counsel at Farm Sanctuary, has been promoted to CEO and executive director of the animal-welfare and livestock-rescue group.
Susan Rifkin, executive director of the Lillian and Larry Goodman Foundations, has been tapped as executive director of the Tawani and Pritzker Military foundations, the grant-making arms of Tawani Enterprises, a company founded by Jennifer Pritzker, an heiress to the Hyatt hotel fortune.
Patricia Smith, a senior policy adviser at the Reinvestment Fund, will be the new president and CEO of the Funders’ Network for Smart Growth and Livable Communities.
Benjamin Strauss, chief scientist at Climate Central, has been promoted to president and CEO. He follows Paul Hanle, who is retiring after seven years in the lead role.
Melissa Wu, chief program officer at Education Pioneers, has been promoted to CEO. She will succeed Scott Morgan, who founded the group nearly 15 years ago and is stepping down in June.

Soni Gupta, executive director of Home Funders, has joined the Boston Foundation as director of neighborhoods and housing.
David Kennedy, senior associate vice president for development at Stanford University, will join Duke University in June as vice president of alumni affairs and development. He succeeds Robert Shepard, who is retiring on June 30 after 14 years as Duke’s chief advancement officer.
Teresa Lane, senior principal-gifts officer on the Nature Conservancy’s global development team, has been appointed vice president of philanthropy at the Wilderness Society.
Lisa Lapin, vice president for university communications at Stanford University, has become the vice president of communications at the J. Paul Getty Trust.
Khatmeh Osseiran-Hanna, interim vice president for university advancement at Indiana University of Pennsylvania, was named permanently to the role. Prior to joining the university in September, she served as vice president for institutional advancement and external affairs and executive director of the College of Staten Island Foundation.
Rita Walters, vice president for advancement at the Maryland Institute College of Art, has joined Catholic Charities of Baltimore as its chief development officer.
Mellissia Zanjani, vice president for institutional advancement at the University of Pittsburgh at Johnstown, has been appointed vice president for institutional advancement at Lincoln University.
Departures
Jane Chu, chairman of the National Endowment for the Arts, will step down June 4 after four years leading the federal grant-making agency.
Eric Henry, CEO and chief investment officer of the Hershey Trust since 2012, has resigned. The charity manages $13.5 billion in assets for the Milton Hershey School, the richest private school in the United States, as well as the M.S. Hershey Foundation Trust and the Hershey Cemetery Trust. It also owns a controlling stake in the Hershey chocolate conglomerate.
Cheptoo Kositany-Buckner, director of the American Jazz Museum in Kansas City, Mo., plans to resign from her leadership role following the recommendation of a commissioned report by Museum Management Consultants that criticized the museum’s leadership.
Harriet Sanford, president and CEO of the NEA Foundation, will step down in February 2019 after 13 years at the head of this grant maker for educators, school districts, and teachers’ unions.
Legacies
Janis Roth, who served for 15 years as executive director of the Toronto branch of Jewish Immigrant Aid Services, died on April 29 from cancer.
