American nonprofits raised more than $220 million over five years to support Jewish settlements in the West Bank, in effect subsidizing an Israeli policy the U.S. government has long opposed, writes the Associated Press, citing an investigation by Haaretz.
The Israeli newspaper reviewed tax-deductible gifts by U.S. donors to some 50 groups from 2009 through 2013. Successive U.S. administrations have opposed settlement construction, a flashpoint in the conflict between Israel and Palestinians. According to the Haaretz report, as cited by AP, much of the money has been used to buy buildings and improve living conditions in Jewish settlements, but some has provided legal aid for extremist settler groups.
