Here are notable new grant awards compiled by the Chronicle:
Kelvin and Eleanor Smith Foundation
$25 million challenge grant to the Cleveland Museum of Art.
Of the total, $15 million is designated for exhibitions; $5 million will endow the salary and work of the curator of decorative arts; $2.5 million will help renovate the museum’s north lobby; and $2.5 million is for landscaping.
Nomis Foundation
$20 million over four years to the Salk Institute’s Nomis Center for Immunobiology and Microbial Pathogenesis for neuroimmunology research focusing on the interactions between the immune and nervous systems.
Otto Bremer Trust
$14.7 million to 170 grantees to enhance quality of life for residents of Minnesota, Montana, North Dakota, and Wisconsin.
Coca-Cola Foundation
$10 million to the International Union for Conservation of Nature for its IslandPlas project to clean up plastic waste and reduce water pollution on seven African islands.
Tawani Foundation
$10 million partial challenge grant to the Chicago Symphony Orchestra Association toward its $175 million fundraising campaign to bolster its endowment, pay down debt, and add to its musicians’ pension plan.
Of the total, $5 million was given outright and the remaining $5 million has been pledged to match gifts from other donors to the campaign.
JPMorgan Chase
$9.6 million to eight organizations for efforts to preserve homeownership opportunities and drive generational wealth-building opportunities for residents of marginalized rural and urban communities in Georgia, New York, Jacksonville, Fla., Pittsburgh, and Washington, D.C.
Swenson Family Foundation
$7 million to Children’s Hospital of Orange County to expand its WellSpace program, which provides in-school access to health and wellness resources for students in kindergarten through eighth grade, and enhance pediatric mental health throughout the hospital system.
Select Medical
$5 million over five years to Harrisburg University of Science and Technology to create the Select Medical Institute of Physical Therapy and Movement, continue its undergraduate exercise-science program, and develop a program to award a doctorate in physical therapy.
Salesforce
$3.95 million to seven nonprofit groups for their programs to make clean energy more affordable and equitable for marginalized communities, develop more renewable energy, and create green jobs.
The grantees are RE-volv, Groundswell, GRID Alternatives, Planet Reimagined, Working Power, the Honnold Foundation, and Evergreen Climate Innovations.
Gordon and Betty Moore Foundation
$3.7 million to the Cary Institute of Ecosystem Studies to establish the Western Fire and Forest Resilience Collaborative, which will develop interdisciplinary solutions to better manage wildfires in the western United States.
Doris Duke Foundation
$3 million to the Council of Medical Specialty Societies for a collaborative project between researchers and clinicians to make better use of data about race in clinical algorithms.
John A. Hartford Foundation
$1.9 million over three years to the National Rural Health Association to advance policies and programs for older adults who live in rural communities.
Foundation Fighting Blindness
$1.7 million to Opus Genetics to advance two preclinical candidate programs to help develop new treatments for inherited retinal diseases.
SECU Foundation
$1.6 million to Vecinos to open a new medical center and human-services hub to serve low-income and uninsured adults in North Carolina’s Macon County and the surrounding area.
New Grant Opportunity
The Daniel and Barbara Chapman Trust is accepting applications for the Chapman Prize, an annual award that recognizes the efforts and achievements of individuals and nonprofit organizations in the United States that make significant contributions to American society. Up to $100,000 is awarded each year; for 2024, the focus area is health and wellness. Applicants must be either a U.S. citizen or a nonprofit group based in the United States, have been conducting charitable work for at least three years, and be able to demonstrate a record of success. Applications are due September 30.
