Gordon and Betty Moore Foundation
$140 million to the Symbiosis in Aquatic Systems Initiative, which will develop new tools, theory, and concepts about aquatic symbioses and microorganisms, including the ecosystem roles they play in marine and freshwater habitats. Alex’s Lemonade Stand Foundation
$25 million pledge to the Crazy 8, its new program to address eight critical obstacles in pediatric cancer research.
Cigna Corporation
$25 million over five years to Healthier Kids for Our Future, the health-care company’s program that aims to reduce childhood hunger worldwide and improve access to nutrition in local communities.
Sherman Fairchild Foundation
$10 million to the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill for the Chancellor’s Science Scholars Program, which encourages students to pursue careers in science, technology, engineering, and mathematics. The William R. Kenan Jr. Charitable Trust also pledged a $5 million challenge grant to the program, requiring the university to raise an additional $10 million by the end of 2023.
AWS Foundation
$2 million gift to Arts United to efforts to improve inclusivity for people with sensory disabilities attending performances at the Arts Campus Fort Wayne.
Robert Wood Johnson Foundation
$2 million to the Urban Land Institute Foundation to promote health, wellness, and economic equity through better real-estate and community-development practices.
Sisters of St. Francis of Dubuque, Iowa
$2 million to Briar Cliff University to endow a professorship in theology.
Kresge Foundation
$1.3 million to the Motown Museum for its public plaza and other community spaces.
Belk
$1 million to Family Promise for its efforts to reduce homelessness across the South.
Hauser & Wirth
$1 million to California State University at Los Angeles for the undergraduate program in the Department of Television, Film, and Media Studies. Hauser & Wirth is a modern- and contemporary-art gallery in Los Angeles.
New Grant Opportunities
The Kenneth Rainin Foundation is accepting letters of inquiry for its Innovator Awards, which support high-risk research designed to predict and prevent inflammatory bowel disease. Grants are worth up to $200,000 for one-year research projects at universities, medical centers, or research institutions. Letters of inquiry are due March 15.
The Joy in Childhood Foundation is accepting proposals for grants through its Dogs for Joy program, which will disburse $2 million in multiyear grants to create or expand programs that bring in-residence therapy dogs to work full time with pediatric patients. Eligible applicants include children’s hospitals and general hospitals with dedicated pediatric departments in areas where Dunkin’ or Baskin-Robbins restaurants are located. Applications are due March 31.
