New York City Mayor Bill de Blasio will wind down a nonprofit formed to promote his policy agenda that has come in for scrutiny for its fundraising and spending, The Wall Street Journal writes.
A spokesman for the Campaign for One New York confirmed that the group, which has raised almost $5 million since Mr. de Blasio’s election in 2013, is closing. The organization is no longer raising money, and its termination will be formally announced later this month, according to the Journal.
Sources close to the mayor said they believe the nonprofit has followed all financial rules, but City Hall wants to eliminate potential distractions ahead of Mr. de Blasio’s 2017 re-election bid. The group has supported mayoral efforts such as universal prekindergarten and paid for travel, polling, and other expenses. Ethics watchdogs contend ithas created conflicts of interest because it can take unlimited donations from individuals, companies, and unions that do business with the city.
