National Council of Nonprofits Will Install New CEO in January

Diane Yentel will join the National Council of Nonprofits as its next president and CEO.

National Council of Nonprofits

Diane Yentel will become its president and CEO, effective January 13. Currently she is president and CEO of the National Low Income Housing Coalition.

Yentel will succeed David Thompson, who has served as its acting CEO since Tim Delaney retired over the summer. Thompson will return to his role as vice president of public policy.

Community Foundation for Southeast Michigan

Nicole Sherard-Freeman will be promoted from chief operating officer to president of the $1.3 billion community fund in January.

National Council of Nonprofits

Community Foundation for Southeast Michigan

Nicole Sherard-Freeman will be promoted from chief operating officer to president of the $1.3 billion community fund in January.

She will succeed Richard DeVore, who has led the foundation since 2022 and plans to retire this winter.

NBA Foundation

Ruth Jurgensen, CEO at Prep for Prep, has been tapped as executive director of the basketball league’s grant maker to advance economic empowerment for young Black people.

She succeeds Greg Taylor, who has led the foundation since it was created in 2020.

More New CEOs

Jonathon Dworkin, vice president of policy and communications at NewDEAL, will now also serve as its executive director of the NewDEAL Forum.

Tom Jacobs has been appointed CEO and executive director of the College Baseball Foundation and Hall of Fame. Most recently he was senior associate commissioner and chief operating officer at the Atlantic 10 Conference.

Blake-Anthony Johnson, president and CEO of the Chicago Sinfonietta, is now CEO of the New Orleans Jazz and Heritage Festival and Foundation.

Independent Sector

The coalition of civil-society organizations has named three new vice presidents.

Jennifer Mellen, senior vice president for development at Human Rights First, will now serve as vice president of institutional advancement.

Rashid Mosley has become vice president of programming. Previously he was a senior policy program manager at the Urban Institute’s Center on Nonprofits and Philanthropy.

Andrea Risotto, chief communications officer at the Brookings Institution, was appointed vice president of communications.

Oceana

The marine conservation group has promoted three senior leaders.

Kathryn Matthews was promoted from chief scientist to senior vice president and chief scientist, overseeing the conservation group’s operations in the Philippines and its planned expansion to three new countries in Africa and Southeast Asia.

Daniel Olivares, vice president and leader of Oceana’s campaigns in Peru, is now senior vice president and will oversee its law department in Washington.

Liesbeth van der Meer has been promoted from vice president to senior vice president; she will continue guiding Oceana’s campaigns in Chile and Brazil and will also lead the group’s Global Human Resources Department from its headquarters in Washington.

Other Notable Appointments

Rahul Ali, head of global programs and grants at the OneSight EssilorLuxottica Foundation, has been tapped as vice president of eye health at Helen Keller Intl, a global health organization.

Yully Cha has been appointed senior vice president of research and policy and senior adviser at the racial-equity group Embrace Boston. Most recently she was a consultant to nonprofits on capital campaigns, organizational growth, and strategic planning.

Matthew Ewing, vice president of advancement at Boise State University and CEO of the Boise State University Foundation, has become senior vice president for development at the Indiana University Foundation.

Jeanette Gisbert, executive director of Volunteer New York, will become deputy director at Neighbors Link later this year.

George Lanza is the new chief of staff at the Miami-Dade Beacon Council, a public-private partnership to drive economic development in South Florida. He will remain chairman of the company he founded, Marketing Services America.

David McGhee will next serve as executive vice president and chief operating officer at the Community Foundation of Greater Flint, a $217 million grant maker in Michigan. For the past year, he has been CEO of the Steve Fund, which supports the mental health of young people of color.

Erik Moss was named director of Water Cooler at Pegasus Park, a nonprofit group that subsidizes the rent for shared working space for other Dallas charities and offers tenants technical support and access to philanthropic capital. It was created in a partnership between the Dallas Foundation and Lyda Hill Philanthropies. Previously, Moss was chief of staff at the Child Poverty Action Lab.

Daniel Rothschild, the former executive director of the Mercatus Center at George Mason University, has been appointed director of the Ronald Reagan Institute’s Center for Civics, Education, and Opportunity.

Stephanie Smith, associate vice president for advancement at Northern Arizona University, has been named vice president for advancement at Idaho State University.

Mark Theiss will become vice president for development and central programs at the University of Cincinnati Foundation in December. He is currently assistant vice president for development at Pennsylvania State University.

Limor Tomer will join the Segerstrom Center for the Arts as vice president of programming and production, effective January 6. For the past 13 years, she has been general manager of the Live Arts Department at the Metropolitan Museum of Art.

Michael Williams, managing director of operations and growth at KIPP NYC, has joined the Brooklyn Children’s Museum as executive vice president and chief operating officer.

Departure

Eola Dance has stepped down after one year as president and CEO of the Montpelier Foundation, which maintains the historic estate of President James Madison. Krista Costello, chief operating officer, will serve as acting president and CEO until a permanent successor has been named.
