Here are notable new grant awards compiled by the Chronicle:
NBA and the National Basketball Players Association
$300 million over 10 years to create the NBA Foundation, which will make grants to foster economic growth and career readiness in Black communities nationwide. Each of the 30 teams in the NBA will donate $1 million per year over the next decade.
Bill & Melinda Gates Foundation
$150 million, in partnership with Gavi, the Vaccine Alliance, to the Serum Institute of India to accelerate the manufacturing and delivery of up to 100 million doses of future Covid-19 vaccines from AstraZeneca and Novavax to people in low- and middle-income countries. The institute has promised the vaccine will be available at less than $3 per dose.
Lilly Endowment
$100 million to the National Urban League to create the Indianapolis African American Quality of Life Renewal Initiative, a collaboration with the Indianapolis Urban League and the African American Coalition of Indianapolis.
David and Lucile Packard Foundation
$100 million over five years for racial justice and equity. The first grant paid from this commitment is $20 million to the Solidaire Network’s Black Liberation Pooled Fund.
Edward Jones
$25 million over five years to the Alzheimer’s Association to enhance care and support programs and advance research and awareness campaigns of the disease. This new grant adds on a previous donation of $25 million in 2016.
George Gund Foundation
$14.4 million to organizations that are addressing the most pressing issues resulting from the Covid-19 pandemic in Ohio, particularly in Cleveland. The grants include $2.1 million to the Energy Foundation, with $1 million earmarked for a new fund that will center racial justice in its work to support climate and clean-energy programs in Ohio.
Ascendium Education Group
$10 million commitment to postsecondary education networks and membership organizations to continue operations during the Covid-19 health crisis. To date, a total of $3.1 million has been awarded to Achieving the Dream and the American Association of State Colleges and Universities.
Charles and Lynn Schusterman Family Foundation
$10 million to Pivotal Ventures for the Equality Can’t Wait Challenge, a program in partnership with Lever for Change that will make grants to organizations with innovative ideas to expand women’s power and influence in the United States by 2030.
Pritzker Traubert Foundation
$10 million to Always Growing Auburn Gresham to build a cultural hub in Chicago’s South Side. This organization is the winner of the foundation’s Chicago Prize.
National Collaborative on Gun Violence Research
$7.5 million to 15 recipients to study officer-involved shootings, intimate-partner gun violence, and the risks and benefits of gun ownership and use. This organization was established with a $20 million gift from Arnold Ventures in 2018 and has also received grants from Wells Fargo, the Missouri Foundation for Health, the Conrad N. Hilton Foundation, and the Harry Frank Guggenheim Foundation.
Comcast NBCUniversal Foundation
$7 million to PHLConnectED to provide free internet service and connected devices, as well as digital skills training and tech support, to 35,000 low-income households with students in Philadelphia’s K-12 public schools ahead of the start of the school year. The program also received grants of $1 million each from the Lenfest Foundation, the Neubauer Family Foundation, the Philadelphia School Partnership, and the William Penn Foundation.
State Employees’ Credit Union and SECU Foundation
$3 million to 34 nonprofit groups in North Carolina for operational support during the Covid-19 crisis.
Andrew W. Mellon Foundation
$1.5 million across 15 grants to organizations that offer higher-education opportunities to incarcerated people during the Covid-19 pandemic.
GHR Foundation
$1 million to the La Jolla Institute for Immunology for research on antibody therapeutics to treat Covid-19 through its Coronavirus Immunotherapy Consortium.
Morris Foundation
$1 million to the North Texas Area Community Health Centers to support and rename the Northside Community Health Center after the foundation.
New Grant Opportunity
Citizens Bank and NECN will award grants to charities working on Covid-19 relief and social equity through its Champions in Action program. Organizations in Massachusetts with an operating budget of $5 million or less can apply for grants worth up to $35,000 each in unrestricted funding and free television coverage on NECN. Applications are due August 21.
