In three states nonprofits are grappling with thefts of their funds:
• Two Middleton, Ind., women have been sentenced for their role in stealing $177,000 from Port of Hope Centers, a nonprofit that runs alcohol and drug addiction centers, reports The Republic.
• In Hellertown, Pa., a woman has been charged with stealing approximately $20,000 from the Shepherds in Monroe County Inc., a charity that provides low-income housing for the elderly, according to The Morning Call. The woman, who worked as a secretary at the organization, used the money to pay her bills and to support her gambling habit, court documents charge.
