Billionaire entrepreneur Alfred Mann, who gave hundreds of millions of dollars to support biomedical research after earning a fortune in the field, died Thursday at age 90, reports the Los Angeles Times.
The Las Vegas resident’s major gifts included $200 million in 1998 to establish bioengineering institutes at the University of Southern California and the University of California at Los Angeles; $100 million in 2004 to create a similar center at the Technion-Israel Institute of Technology in Haifa; and $70 million in 2013 to the Nevada Community Foundation.
Mr. Mann founded 17 companies in a 70-year career that encompassed aerospace and pharmaceuticals as well as medical technology. Firms he headed developed breakthrough devices for the treatment of diabetes, heart disease, and sight and hearing loss.
