Bolder Giving executive director Jason Franklin is stepping down to become the W.K. Kellogg Chair in Community Philanthropy at Grand Valley State University’s Johnson Center for Philanthropy, the nation’s first endowed chair in the subject. He begins on June 1.
Mr. Franklin spent five years at the helm of Bolder Giving, which seeks to get people to donate more money and to be more creative in their philanthropy. He spearheaded efforts like Giving Communities, which sought to connect donors with similar philanthropic interests, and Give Out Day, an annual event aimed at encouraging donors to support gay and lesbian causes.
In his new role, he will work with community foundations, crowdfunding platforms, donor networks, and other vehicles for collective giving to encourage more philanthropy. He also will help organizations apply research about fundraising to their efforts to raise more money. “My aim is to inspire and encourage the most effective and powerful giving possible to the causes and communities donors care about,” Mr. Franklin said in a statement.
The chair was established with $1.5 million from the W.K. Kellogg Foundation and from the Kellogg Company’s 25-Year Employees’ Fund.
Other notable recent staffing changes:
- American Cancer Society: Gary Reedy, a veteran health-care industry executive who worked for Johnson & Johnson among other companies, was named the new chief executive.
- Brooklyn Academy of Music: Katy Clark, president and executive director of the Orchestra of St. Luke’s, will take over as president in June.
- The Center for Nonprofit Excellence: Gregory Nielsen, former executive director of Green Hill Therapy, takes over as president Monday.
- The Children’s Home Society & Trust Foundation: Andrea Myers, former development director for major gifts at Seattle Children’s Hospital and Research Foundation, will be the organization’s first executive director.
- Museum of Fine Arts, Boston: Matthew Teitelbaum, director and chief executive of the Art Gallery of Ontario, will start as director on August 3.
- YMCA of Greater New York: Sharon Greenberger, senior vice president for facilities and real estate at the NewYork-Presbyterian Hospital, will take over as chief executive.
- Baltimore Museum of Art: Doreen Bolger, director of the Baltimore Museum of Art, is retiring after 17 years on the job, effective June 30.
- Annenberg Foundation Executive Director Leonard Aube has died of cancer, the organization announced April 9. Last month The Chronicle wrote about Mr. Aube’s efforts to bring together civic, business, and nonprofits leaders to secure more federal funding for the Los Angeles area.
