Debra Mesch, a scholar who studies female donors, will hold the Eileen Lamb O’Gara Chair in Women’s Philanthropy at Indiana University’s Lilly Family School of Philanthropy. The position is believed to be the first of its kind in academe. Her appointment is effective on July 1.
She will also continue in her current posts as director of the Women’s Philanthropy Institute at the school and professor of public affairs in the School of Public and Environmental Affairs at Indiana University-Purdue University Indianapolis. In her new role, she will conduct research on women’s giving, volunteering, and leadership in philanthropic organizations as well as on gender differences in philanthropy.
The chair was established in 2013 with a $1.5-million donation from Maureen and Jim Hackett and is named for Ms. Hackett’s mother, a businesswoman and philanthropist.
Ms. Mesch, who has published more than 45 articles in peer-reviewed journals, is also leading a project supported by the Bill & Melinda Gates Foundation on women’s philanthropy.
