President Obama to Announce Nonprofit My Brother’s Keeper Alliance

May 1, 2015

On Monday President Barack Obama will announce the creation on a new nonprofit organization to support young minority males, Crain’s New York Business reports. It is still unclear how My Brother’s Keeper Alliance will differ from the White House program My Brother’s Keeper.

The president first announced the effort in February 2014 when a group of 29 grant makers pledged $200-million over five years to help minority boys and young men. Charitites soon pledged to chip in millions more. Foundation funding for causes supporting black males has been on the rise in recent years.

The White House announcement comes just a week after rioters blazed a trail of destruction throughout Baltimore in reaction to the death of Freddie Gray, a 25-year-old from West Baltimore who was fatally injured while in police custody on April 12. The president has said he hopes to return to community organizing following his presidency.
