Second Video Adds Fuel to Planned Parenthood Firestorm

An anti-abortion group released a second undercover video Tuesday showing a Planned Parenthood official discussing remuneration for providing tissue from aborted fetuses for medical research, The Washington Post reports.

Activists from the Center for Medical Progress posing as buyers of human tissue recorded the encounter with Mary Gatter, a medical official with Planned Parenthood in California.

Dr. Gatter is seen discussing abortion techniques that keep fetal organs intact for research purposes and asking the purported buyers about prices, at one point joking, “I want a Lamborghini.” She also states, “We don’t want to be in the position of being accused of selling tissue” and that payment is for “costs associated with the use of our space, and all that kind of stuff.”

The center’s first video, posted last week, led House Republicans and several states to begin investigating Planned Parenthood’s handling of fetal tissue, which is illegal to sell but legal to donate for research purposes. In both videos the Planned Parenthood officials say the group does not profit from such transactions and seeks only to recoup its costs.

A Planned Parenthood spokesman said the videos are misleadingly edited and part of longstanding efforts by abortion foes to tar the organization. The Center for Medical Progress is led by David Daleiden, an activist who previously worked with the controvesial anti-abortion group Operation Rescue and Live Action, which orchestrated past Planned Parenthood video stings, Politico and The New York Times write.
