Surdna Foundation Taps Ford Foundation Alumnus as President

Don Chen has been tapped as the $1 billion foundation’s next president. Previously he served as director of the Ford Foundation’s Just Cities and Regions Team. He follows Phillip Henderson, who announced last fall that he would retire once a successor was found.

Jewish Federation of Cleveland

Erika Rudin-Luria, senior vice president and chief strategy officer, has been promoted to president, effective January 1. She succeeds Stephen Hoffman, who plans to retire in December. The federation in Ohio is frequently on the Philanthropy 400, our annual survey of the charities that raise the most money; last year, it raised $80.5 million.

Smithsonian Institution

Chase Robinson, a professor of history and president of the Graduate Center at the City University of New York, will become the director of the Arthur M. Sackler Gallery and Freer Gallery of Art on December 10.

More New CEOs

Beth Chandler, interim president and CEO of YW Boston, has accepted the position on a permanent basis. She was previously chief operating officer before assuming the top role last fall, when Sylvia Ferrell-Jones stepped down shortly before her death in November. YW Boston was the first YWCA in the country and now works for racial and gender equity.

Lorraine Hariton, senior vice president for global partnerships at the New York Academy of Sciences, has been named president and CEO of Catalyst, a nonprofit group that empowers women around the world who work in business.

William Miller, regional chief development officer in New Jersey for the American Red Cross, has been named CEO of the Kean University Foundation.

Other Notable Appointments

Arun Baheti has joined the California Wellness Foundation as vice president of operations, overseeing grants management and other responsibilities. He was previously director of operations and finance at the Writers Guild Foundation.

Regina Biddings-Muro, vice chancellor of institutional advancement at Purdue University Northwest, has become vice president for university advancement at California Lutheran University.

DeShanna Brown has been named vice president for institutional advancement, development, marketing, and communications at Edward Waters College. She was previously director of development at Louisiana State University.

Louise Epstein, managing director of the Innovation Center in the Cockrell School of Engineering at the University of Texas at Austin, has joined the Walton Family Foundation as director of university partnerships.

Regan Grusy has returned to the New Museum as vice president of strategic partnerships. Grusy worked at the museum as director of institutional advancement until 2015, when she left to become chief of staff at the Metropolitan Museum of Art’s Costume Institute.

Tom Hofmann, president of the Ohio Living Foundation, has joined the fundraising consulting firm of Richner and Richner as senior adviser.

Richard Margoluis has been promoted to chief measurement, evaluation, and learning officer at the Gordon and Betty Moore Foundation. He joined the $6.4 billion grant maker in 2016 as a measurement, evaluation, and learning officer, and before to that was the co-founder and co-director of Foundations of Success for 16 years.

Kate Van Tassel has become director of development services at Denham Wolf Real Estate Service, aiding nonprofit clients in real-estate transactions and overseeing construction projects. She was previously a vice president at the New York City Economic Development Corporation.

Departures

Edmund Cain, vice president for grant programs at the Conrad N. Hilton Foundation since 2006, intends to retire on December 31.

Mickey Moore, president and chief advancement officer at the Tallahassee Memorial HealthCare Foundation, has resigned.

Karl Stauber, president and CEO of Danville Regional Foundation since 2007, plans to step aside before August 1, 2019, pending the selection of a successor.

Marc Tucker, founder and CEO of the National Center on Education and the Economy since its inception 30 years ago, will leave his leadership role. Anthony Mackay, an education consultant in Australia and CEO of the Centre for Strategic Education, will succeed him as president and CEO, effective January 1.
