Dear Subscriber,
As we mark our 30th year of covering the nonprofit world, I have some exciting news to share with you and the thousands of other subscribers who consider the Chronicle essential reading.
Nonprofit and foundation leaders across the country have urged us to expand our work to help more people as they seek to change the world. Like you, they want more and better news, information, and insights to make their work more effective.
We agree that we must do more to help nonprofits as they face more demands than ever before. That’s why, for the first time, the Chronicle is seeking grants from foundations, corporations, and individuals so we can provide more indispensable information to you.
As you know, we pride ourselves on being transparent about how we report the news and make journalistic decisions, so our choice to accept foundation support requires an even higher level of disclosure about how we operate.
We have posted on our website a gift- acceptance policy that spells out our ethical decision making, and we will disclose all sources of philanthropic support. We’ve also asked Philanthropy New York to serve as our fiscal sponsor, and its oversight will provide another guarantee that we are using grant money responsibly.
We’re proud to announce that our first grant comes from the William and Flora Hewlett Foundation’s effective-philanthropy program, which has a long history of supporting work that advances knowledge about nonprofits and grant making.
We have worked with the foundation’s executives during the past few months, and I have been bolstered by the importance they place on our work and how much they value our journalistic independence.
The grant — $438,000 over two years — will provide us with general operating support so we can research and then decide what’s most important for us to pursue next to serve you better.
We’re counting on plenty of advice and feedback from you on how best to do that work.
As we pursue an ambitious growth plan and seek additional philanthropic support, you have my commitment that our mission will always be the same as yours: to advance changes that improve the lives of people in our communities and around the world.
Please let me know if you have any questions or suggestions.
