Union of Concerned Scientists Appoints Next President

Johanna Chao Kreilick will be its next president of the Union of Concerned Scientists. She comes to the science and sustainability organization from the Open Society Foundations.

Johanna Chao Kreilick will be its next president. She comes to the science and sustainability organization from the Open Society Foundations, where she was an executive officer and founder of its Climate Action Initiative.

Evelyn and Walter Haas Jr. Fund

Raúl Macías, a lawyer and counsel in the democracy program at the Brennan Center for Justice, has been named democracy program director at the $463 million foundation.

Union of Concerned Scientists

In addition, Dan Torres is now immigrant rights program director. Previously, he was special assistant on immigrant rights to Xavier Becerra, the former attorney general of California.

New York Community Trust

Lorie Slutsky, the longtime president of the $2.9 billion community foundation, plans to retire in 2022.

She joined the foundation in 1977 as an intern and rose to become its leader in 1990.

On July 1, Art delaCruz will be promoted from president and chief operating officer to CEO of this organization, which gives military veterans volunteer opportunities in areas recovering from natural disaster and humanitarian crises.

He follows Jake Wood, its co-founder, who will become executive chairman of its Board of Directors at that time.

More New CEOs

Bianca Anderson, a director at ProInspire who led its Leading for Race Equity Leadership Framework, will now serve as co-CEO alongside its founder, Monisha Kapila.

Jesse Brackenbury, executive director of the Rose Kennedy Greenway Conservancy, is the next president and CEO of the Statue of Liberty-Ellis Island Foundation. He succeeds Stephen Briganti, who became its leader in 1986 and is now retiring.

Raymond Codrington has been named CEO of the Weeksville Heritage Center. He is a cultural anthropologist with a focus on hip hop, popular culture, and racial identity and equity, and most recently was executive director of Hi-ARTS in East Harlem.

James (Gib) Godwin III, a retired rear admiral in the U.S. Navy and founder of BriteWerx, has been named president and CEO of Mercy Medical Angels. He follows Robb Alpaugh, who died on January 9.

Nicole Willis, interim CEO of the Heartland Health Centers for the past nine months, will continue in the role permanently. Previously, she was its vice president of operations.

Other Notable Appointments

Morty Ballen has joined Christel House International as senior vice president for academics. Most recently he was the program director at the Global Schools Forum.

Nancy Kaari, executive director of the American Red Cross Jersey Coast Chapter, has been appointed vice president of advancement at Brookdale Community College.

Daniel Lau has been named democracy frontlines fund initiative officer at the Libra Foundation. He comes to the $500 million foundation from Northern California Grantmakers where he was program and events manager.

Departures

Jacky Alling, chief philanthropy officer at the Arizona Community Foundation, has departed the foundation after 17 years to become senior fellow for philanthropy at Arizona State University’s Lodestar Center for Philanthropy and Nonprofit Innovation.

Bennie Harris, senior vice president for institutional advancement at the Morehouse School of Medicine, will depart to become chancellor of the University of South Carolina Upstate on July 1.

Peter Slavin, president of Massachusetts General Hospital, will step down after 18 years.

Legacy

Carola Eisenberg, co-founder of Physicians for Human Rights, died on March 11. She was 103.
