Walmart Commits $34.5 Million to Protect U.S. Wildlife Habitats

Among other projects, Walmart's and the National Fish & Wildlife Foundation's Acres for America conservation program helps protect wildlife habitats along the Pee Dee River in South Carolina.

Here are notable new grant awards compiled by the Chronicle:

Robert W. Woodruff Foundation

$80 million to Georgia State University to renovate its campus in downtown Atlanta.

The planned upgrades include expanded walkways and landscaping along Hurt Park, a new dining area and classroom space in its 100 Edgewood building, improvements to the facade of the Arts and Humanities Building, and the addition of gathering space and pedestrian-oriented features in Woodruff Park for students and the surrounding community.

Here are notable new grant awards compiled by the Chronicle:

Walmart

$34.5 million over 10 years to the National Fish and Wildlife Foundation to continue its Acres for America conservation program to protect wildlife habitat in the United States.

Hormel Foundation

$25.6 million to strengthen community-based organizations that improve quality of life for residents of Austin, Minn.

The recipients are the Austin Community Charitable Fund, Austin Community Growth Ventures, Austin Community Scholarship Committee, Austin Public Schools, Cedar Valley Services, the City of Austin, the Hormel Institute at the University of Minnesota, Mayo Clinic Health Systems-Austin, the Parenting Resource Center, Riverland Community College, Salvation Army, United Way of Mower County, and the YMCA of Austin.

Barbara Brunckhorst Foundation

$25 million to the American Association for the Study of Liver Diseases Foundation to establish the R. Todd Stravitz Research Fund, which will back research on liver disease by early-career investigators.

Gavi, the Vaccine Alliance

$23.4 million to Save the Children and Unicef to back immunization efforts for children under age five in Sudan and reduce the spread of preventable diseases including measles, malaria, pneumonia, diarrheal diseases, and cholera.

George Gund Foundation

$14.7 million to nonprofit groups in Ohio, particularly organizations that use public policy and advocacy to address climate change, democracy, education, and racial inequity.

Bunbury Fund

$12.8 million in unrestricted grants to 11 community-based nonprofits in the Trenton, N.J., area.

The fund, which is housed at the Princeton Area Community Foundation, plans to spend down the rest of its $16 million in assets over the next year.

Greater Los Angeles Education Foundation

$12.8 million through the Inglewood Youth Education Fund to 12 organizations that serve students and young people who live in Inglewood, Calif.

Ford Foundation

$10 million commitment to the Global Philanthropy Project’s Fund Our Futures Campaign, which is seeking to raise $150 million to provide long-term support to organizations that protect the rights of LGBTQ people in low-income countries.

The Ford Foundation is a financial supporter of the Chronicle.

Home Depot Foundation

$10 million to NYU Langone Health for the Home Depot Emergency Department at NYU Langone Health—Cobble Hill, which will provide emergency health care for residents of Brooklyn.

Champlin Foundation

$9.1 million to 109 nonprofit organizations across Rhode Island for capital improvements.

The grants in this round ranged from $2,800 to $700,000.

Medical Technology Enterprise Consortium

$5.6 million to Georgia Southern University to establish the Tactical and Occupational Performance Institute, which will combine multidisciplinary teaching, research, and community outreach to prevent injuries among active-duty members of the military and first responders.

Santander Bank

$4.5 million to 135 nonprofit organizations that advance education, entrepreneurship, and employability.

The largest commitment, of $1 million over five years, went to the Community First Fund Federal Credit Union, which predominantly serves the Latino and Black community in Philadelphia.

NFL Foundation and Local Initiatives Support Corporation

$3.2 million through the Grassroots Field Grant Program to partner with community organizations, schools, and parks to develop football fields in 15 neighborhoods across the United States.

Music Man Foundation

$2.7 million to 15 nonprofit organizations that use music to improve education, health care, and community well-being, and to advocate for arts education and public funding for the arts.

Creative Visions

$1 million through its Students Rebuild Spark Peace Project to support peacebuilding projects at community-based organizations.

Ceeds of Peace, Kids for Peace, 100cameras, CARE, Choose Love, Green Horizon Ventures, and MUSÉ will share the grants.

GlaxoSmithKline

$1 million through its GSK Impact Awards to 20 health nonprofits in the Triangle region of North Carolina and the Philadelphia metropolitan area.

Each nonprofit is receiving an unrestricted grant of $50,000.
