Job Title:  Director, Financial Planning and Analysis

Reports to:  Vice President for Finance & CFO

 

Job Summary:

Reporting to the Vice President for Finance & CFO, the Director, Financial Planning and Analysis is responsible for developing and managing the planning, forecasting, and analysis function and implementing appropriate systems, analytical tools, and processes necessary to support decision making for the American Board of Pediatrics and the American Board of Pediatrics Foundation.  This position collaborates with the senior management team (SMT), the Controller, and other key administrators, and requires experience leading budgeting, forecasting, project management, and analysis functions.  The Director, FPA will also define, maintain, and report on the business metrics relevant to measuring success against ABP objectives and will work closely with the CFO to identify actionable improvements in the operations and financial results of the company.

Position Requirements:

Education:

Bachelor’s degree in Finance or Accounting;

MBA in Finance preferred

Certified Public Accountant

Experience:

Ten years accounting and finance experience

Three to five years demonstrated project management experience

3+ years experience as Manager or Director of Financial Planning & Analysis

Experience with INTACCT and ADP software preferred

Essential Functions and Responsibilities:

       Financial Planning and Analysis

  • Direct the activities of the Financial Planning and Analysis team (2). Train, develop and mentor staff as needed to ensure the best utilization of knowledge, skills, and abilities
  • Provide expertise and leadership in the development of planning and analysis activities, as well as the management and monitoring of project activities and workflow
  • As a member of the Budget Working Group, lead the planning for the development of the annual operating budgets for the ABP and related entities. Establish budget calendars and appropriate timelines and communicate expectations to departmental budget administrators to ensure that budgets are completed on a timely basis
  • Develop and maintain well documented budgeting and forecasting policies and procedures.
  • Direct the preparation of the rolling ten-year financial forecast for the ABP and related entities. Work with CFO and members of Senior Management to analyze long-term plans.    Provide ongoing updates to the forecast model as programmatic changes or new initiatives are considered, so that the CEO and CFO will have the information needed to support on-going decision making.
  • Develop and maintain long-term master capital plan identifying anticipated capital additions, deletions, renewals and replacements. Monitor capital projects to ensure that expenditures are within budget and that projects are closed timely.

  • Monitor ABP intellectual property (IP) development to determine when assets can be placed in service so that assets are depreciated in a timely manner.
  • Provide financial impact modeling and forecast sensitivity analysis to evaluate the financial implications of joint ventures with external organizations and make recommendations on financial feasibility

       Management Reporting

  • Provide analysis of monthly financial results including the interpretation of current month performance as a predictive tool for attainment of quarterly and annual performance expectations
  • Maintain an effective financial and operational metrics system to provide the CFO with concise information regarding performance. Analyze and monitor performance indicators, highlighting trends and analyzing causes of unexpected variances
  • Manage and track the performance of investment portfolios in keeping with investment policy guidelines
  • Participate in the design and development of reporting packages and performance tracking. Prepare presentations materials for internal and external meetings as needed to help the CFO educate committee members on financial matters

 

       Systems Management

  • Lead in the identification and selection of appropriate budgeting and forecasting software tools to support the financial planning and analysis process.  Develop implementation plan for software selected. Recommend software enhancements and upgrades as needed
  • Train staff on use of software selected
