POSITION:           Assistant Director of Development

JOB OVERVIEW

 

The Assistant Director of Development collaborates with the Chief Development Officer to ensure department effectiveness in meeting annual revenue goals of the Film Society’s giving programs, including board, member/patron, endowment campaign and other major gifts, and gala fundraising. The Assistant Director has primary responsibility for the development team operations and staff development.  S/he manages and cultivates a portfolio of current and prospective donors of $5,000+ through in-person meetings, calls, and emails.

 

PRINCIPAL DUTIES

 

Fundraising:

 

  • Oversees the Patron Program including renewals and acquisitions campaigns, ad hoc giving opportunities, and festival fundraising. Arranges and leads cultivation networking opportunities.
  • Responsible for a diverse portfolio of Patrons $5,000 and above to solicit renewals and upgrades and for cultivation.
  • Solicits gifts for series underwriting and special events.
  • Assists Chief Development Officer in managing high-level patron festival experience, including ticketing, seating, concierge experiences, event attendance.
  • Manager of ticketing and seating strategy for Individual Giving for festivals, series, and screenings year-round, including the New York Film Festival.
  • Works with the Chief Development Officer on Capital and Endowment Campaigns
  • Oversees Patron and Member acknowledgments/ renewal correspondence.
  • Manages and attends Patron Evenings and donor events; overseeing check-in and greeting guests.
  • Oversees development relationship with Marketing Department and ensures effective collaboration.
  • Advises and mentors junior staff.
  • Assists in updating and creating development print materials.

 

Managerial:

 

  • Assist the Chief Development Officer in managing the process of gift entry and reporting to senior management.
  • Coordinates bi-weekly Development team meetings

 

 

Galas, Festivals, and Events:

 

  • Works collaboratively with Chief Development Officer and Director of Special Events to plan monthly Patron evenings and Patron/Member acquisitions events and fundraising aspects of the Gala.
  • Collaborates with Special Events on invitations to Individual Giving constituents.
  • Takes the lead on seating the house for Annual Chaplin Award Gala.
  • Manages ticketing and seating strategy for Individual Giving festivals, series and screenings year-round, including the New York Film Festival.
  • Oversees New York Film Festival Member and Patron desks.
  • Serves as liaison for Alice Tully Hall box office for Patron Program ticket orders.
  • Works closely with Chief Development Officer in board ticketing, seating and overall festival experience.
  • Assists Chief Development Officer in managing high-level patron festival experience, including ticketing, seating, concierge experiences, event attendance.

 

EXPERIENCE/SKILLS REQUIRED:

 

  • Bachelor’s Degree, preferably in the arts.
  • 4-5 years successful fundraising experience, preferably in a not-for-profit organization
  • Proven ability to work with donors and patrons, handle confidential information, and exercise discretion.
  • Excellent communication and organizational skills and meticulous attention to detail.
  • Comfort soliciting donations by phone and in person.
  • Available for night and weekend events.
  • Familiarity with development databases, Tessitura strongly preferred.
  • Proven ability to work independently, take initiative, anticipate challenges, solve problems, and work under pressure.
