The Tenement Museum preserves and interprets the history of immigration through the personal experiences of the generations of newcomers who settled in and built lives on Manhattan's Lower East Side, America's iconic immigrant neighborhood; forges emotional connections between visitors and immigrants past and present; and enhances appreciation for the profound role immigration has played and continues to play in shaping America's evolving national identity.

Job Responsibilities

The Museum is currently seeking a Vice President of Development who will report directly to the President, and is responsible for helping shape the overall development strategy (in collaboration with the President and the Board) and then executing against the strategy to ensure that the Museum’s fundraising efforts are a success. This includes identifying, cultivating, soliciting and stewarding major gifts from individuals, foundations, corporations and government organizations; oversight of fundraising events; and implementation of annual giving and other direct marketing appeals.  Experience with staging gala fundraising events is a must.  S/he will work closely with the President and staff as a member of the Senior Management Team to align the museum’s fundraising efforts with the strategic direction and needs of the organization. S/he will also work closely with the Board, which is integrally involved in the Museum’s fundraising efforts. 


The Vice President of Development is a highly accomplished professional with a distinguished and proven track record of achieving significant major gift charitable support from both individuals and institutions.

S/he has strong management skills, is a team player with a proven track record of collaborative leadership, has strong writing and interpersonal skills, and has the vision to motivate and lead the five-member development team in a collegial environment.  A strong commitment to the Museum’s mission is a must.

A Bachelor’s degree and a minimum of 10 years of experience of fundraising experience, with the ability to show progressive achievements in personal and institutional solicitation, board development, team building, and the ability to create a high performing and sustainable development program.

Strong proficiency with appropriate donor management programs required.  Experience with a cultural organization as well as the New York metropolitan area is advantageous, but is not required.
