About Global Ties U.S. and the Global Ties Foundation

Global Ties U.S. is a nonprofit that makes international exchange programs more effective. We work with our members and the U.S. Department of State to bring current and future leaders from around the world to communities across the United States. Together, we build deep connections among people from many countries, resulting in a more peaceful, prosperous world.

Global Ties U.S. provides our members—from large, national non-profit organizations to smaller, community-based ones across 45 states and 21 countries—with connections, leadership development, and professional resources, so that they are the strongest, most effective organizations they can be. The leaders who participate in international exchanges—and their host communities—benefit from greater knowledge, further understanding, and deeper relationships. These shared experiences result in stronger local communities and furthers understanding between individuals and nations.

The Global Ties Foundation is the charitable arm of Global Ties U.S.  It seeks to empower a global network of change makers by accelerating innovation in international exchange.  The Foundation focuses on three key pillars: people, tech, and impact.  By building program and initiatives that increase and sustain participant engagement, expand access through new tools, and scale the impact of international exchange, the Foundation aims to transform the exchange experience.

Position Overview Major Duties and Responsibilities

The President and CEO – who heads both organizations, under the guidance of the Boards of Directors – leads a professional staff of 17 and manages an annual budget of approximately $9.5 million. The President serves as principal spokesperson for the Global Ties organization and the Global Ties Foundation and represents the organization to key stakeholders, funders, and partners, including the Department of State, member organizations, policy makers, Members of Congress, the diplomatic corps and volunteers across the country.

The President works with the Chief Operating Officer to oversee the day-to-day operations of the organization. That includes providing guidance to the staff in the strategic development and implementation of all programs; overseeing financial, human resource, and grants management; developing, ensuring and maintaining a diversified funding stream to support program implementation; helping to lead development and fundraising efforts; and serving as primary liaison to the Global Ties U.S. and Global Ties Foundation Boards of Directors.

Specific Areas of Focus Include:

Works closely with the Boards of Directors to provide strategic leadership for the organization

  • Conducts regular assessment of environmental landscape to refine overall strategy.
  • Works to improve, evaluate and report on organizational effectiveness.
  • Works to build a cohesive and effective team at the board and staff levels.

Oversees the Delivery of Programs and Services

  • Engages with partners and members to assess the needs for ongoing educational and training support.
  • Provides strategic vision and oversight of the planning and implementation of national and regional meetings, and other educational events and capacity-building events.
  • Oversees the growth of a new portfolio of customized exchange programs.
  • Provides high-level oversight to the administration of grant programs.
Government Relations
  • Maintains strong and positive relationships with U.S. Department of State representatives and other government partners.
  • Ensures adherence to USG required reporting and grant management procedures.
  • Coordinates Global Ties’ advocacy efforts vis-à-vis Members of Congress and their legislative aid

Leads Global Ties’ efforts to develop new financial resources for the organization and Network

  • Leads and oversees new business development efforts.
  • Builds a philanthropic culture throughout the organization and network through the Global Ties Foundation.
  • Fosters the design, development and execution of new programs and activities that leverage the pillars of the Global Ties Foundation to advance the international exchange field.
Organizational Management
  • Works closely with the Chief Operating Officer to lead and manage administrative, financial and human resource processes and systems.
  • Develops a strong and diverse team of professionals who are committed to the mission of Global Ties.
  • Prepares and recommends annual budgets and financial development plans to the Board of Directors.
  • Implements technological solutions to improve programs and services, communications, government relations and fundraising efforts.
Serves as chief spokesperson for Global Ties
  • Represents Global Ties at meetings and other functions in the international education and exchange community.
  • Visits Global Ties’ member sites to make presentations, exchange ideas and information, and develop member relations
  • Represents Global Ties to the media and general public.
Strengthens and leverages the Global Ties brand nationally and internationally as the “center” of international exchange
  • Positions Global Ties as a thought leader in the public diplomacy and international exchange fields.
  • Drives innovation and develops ecosystems of collaboration inside and outside of the public diplomacy community to advance the international exchange field.
  • Advances monitoring and evaluation models of public diplomacy and international exchange efforts to strengthen the narrative of impact.
Expertise and Skills Required:

 

The President will be an energetic, creative and goal-oriented leader with:

  • Proven visionary leadership and partnership with a Board of Directors in achieving organizational vision and mission
  • Proven success at pursuing and incorporating new revenue sources through a variety of fundraising and entrepreneurial activities, consistent with organizational mission
  • Demonstrated management responsibility with a complex and growing non-profit organization
  • Experience working with affiliated or member organizations
  • Experience working with large federal grant programs
  • Ability to serve as an articulate and visionary spokesperson for the Global Ties network
  • Ability to engage multiple stakeholder groups with finesse and diplomacy
  • Skilled at using technology to improve operational effectiveness and reporting
  • Skilled at leveraging communication platforms (traditional and new) to represent the interests of the organization, public diplomacy and international exchange.
Qualifications:

The President and CEO will have at least a Master’s degree and a minimum of 15 years of experience in a related field, with a minimum of 8 years’ experience in a leadership and management role. Previous experience working with non-profit organizations and any related advanced degrees or certifications are also desirable.
