Tip of the Week
To attract more diverse donors, learn about the cultures of the groups you want to cultivate. Talk with leaders, volunteers, and others from the community to understand what they care about, how they communicate, and how your work intersects with their lives. Some of these conversations may be tough, says Angelique Grant, consultant for Aspen Leadership Group, a consulting firm that focuses on recruitment, diversity, and leadership at nonprofits. “But it’s important to listen and not defend or respond with facts and information about your organization.” For more advice, read How to Create a Culture of Inclusive Fundraising. Disinformation. The John S. and James L. Knight Foundation is providing grants of up to $175,000 for research projects to mitigate the effects of targeted disinformation in communities of color. This opportunity is open to a range of experts working within research institutions, but submissions are especially encouraged from minority-serving organizations such as HBCUs, Hispanic- and AAPI-serving colleges and universities, news organizations, and early-career scholars. Proposals must be submitted by September 15.
Transportation. The Department of Transportation supports efforts to improve transit services or facilities in areas of persistent poverty through planning, engineering, technical studies, or financial plans for projects. The goals are to advance racial equity and support for underserved communities and protect public health and the environment; support transportation planning to improve transit service in areas experiencing long-term economic distress; improve transit access for environmental justice populations, provide equity-focused community outreach in underserved communities, and remove barriers to opportunity; and increase access to jobs and health care through enhanced transit options and improved facilities. The application deadline is August 30.
