Podcast: Philanthropy’s Role in Democracy Today

In these clips from the latest episode of the Business of Giving, host Denver Frederick speaks with Matthew Bishop, senior editor of The Economist magazine, and Gara LaMarche, president of the Democracy Alliance and former CEO of Atlantic Philanthropies.

Mr. Bishop, credited with coining the term "philanthrocapitalism" to describe a kind of giving in which donors put time and energy as well as money into a project and use business to do good, responds to recent criticism of this growing trend and weighs in on the results-only focus of "effective altruism," finding solutions through "hacker philanthropy" and the promise of social-impact bonds.

Mr. LaMarche discusses the role of philanthropy in a democracy, his theory of social change, and his views on philanthrocapitalism.
